The Saturn booster, weighing 463 tons, launched at 8 a.m. and reached 65 miles before its first stage cut, then exploded 160 seconds after launch to release 95 tons of water as a cloud over the Atlantic. NASA called the flight a success as it tested the booster core for a future manned lunar mission.
Pasadena scientists monitor Ranger 4 as it powers toward the moon for a possible first U S touch down. A timer failure halted key TV maneuvers but the craft continues its descent guided by a beeping radio signal from Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Two more area girls join the Alice in Dairyland contest with entries from Brodhead and South Wayne. Cheryl Lee Ringen competes in Region 2 at Evansville next month, Jacqueline Lawrence at Cassville, with other entries from Monroe Brooklyn and Albany. Finalists from each region advance, and 22 contestants face judging on poise beauty appearance personality health and photogenic qualities. Total entries expected over 300.
The second annual Legal Medical Clinic will be held at the junior high auditorium Saturday from 9 30 a m sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin. Monroe Clinic and local bar associations organized the program for southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois attorneys. Topics cover burns fractures brain injury and Sterapy infection with physicians and a doctor lawyer conference for trial preparation. Noon lunch at Marco's. Last year’s meeting was at Monroe Clinic. this year’s venue moved due to high interest.
The Board of Public Works seeks state and federal aid to widen and improve Highway 59 between 20th Avenue East and the city limits. The reconstruction is planned for 1964 or 1965. The board also bought a chforinator for $600 to aid the sewage disposal plant with the new aeration system to curtail odors.
Area residents shed coats as temperatures neared 80 degrees the highest reading this year. Forecasts predict clouds and mild tonight with cooler temperatures tomorrow and possible scattered showers. Tonight 55 to 60 and tomorrow 65 to 75. Yesterday highs ranged from 77 in Monroe to 84 in Lone Rock and 80 in Green Bay Beloit Racine.
A one car crash on County Trunk Y eight miles northwest of Monroe killed Airman 3 C Jerry Ray Norton on leave from Lockbourne AFB Ohio. Norton age 20 and born January 27 1942 in Wilmington NC died instantly. Michael John Carpenter 19 died at St Clare hospital after succumbing to injuries. Funeral arrangements set in Darlington with services Friday and tomorrow details. Surviving relatives listed include Norton’s mother and stepfather and Carpenter’s parents and four sisters. Burial planned at Union Grove cemetery with Truwax AFB personnel in charge.
Mrs. Robert Jones chairing residential distribution asks Green County residents who have not replied to the Easter Seal mailing to respond promptly to aid local service for people with disabilities. Over 60 percent of contributions stay in county. John F. Kundert of Monroe’s Commercial and Savings Bank serves as treasurer and continues accepting gifts.
The Monroe school district schedules a May 22 referendum on a 975000 general obligation bond to fund additions to the senior high and a new junior high. Balloting runs 7 am to 8 pm at the junior high school with eligible voters from Monroe and attached districts.
Nicholas Runde age 21 of Galena died at a Dubuque hospital after an automobile crash on Highway 20 near East Dubuque. His brother Joe Runde 16 died minutes after the accident. The car left the road, hit two cement culverts and toppled a tree. authorities have not determined which brother was driving.
President Kennedy ordered the start of a new atmospheric nuclear test series. Task Force 8, a joint force of over 12,000 personnel, reported a successful shot in the Central Pacific near Christmas and Johnson Islands as preparations began last November.
Stock market retreated in moderate trading as steels led the decline. U S Steel and Jones and Laughlin fell about two points while Alcoa Reynolds Metals shed over a point and Aluminum Ltd. dropped about a point.
Philip Kuehn seeking the Republican nomination for Wisconsin governor proposes replacing the selective sales tax with a general three percent levy. Exemptions would apply to the first $400 of purchases with refunds at year end. He cited a family of four would receive $72 back under a 3% rate.
Exchange student tours take center stage as Monroe hosts and Miss Pat Brooks celebrate with a family dinner in the high school M room. Supt. D J Huenink and hosts welcome guests as students introduce their hosts and temporary families after the meal.
Kenneth R. Petersen of Brodhead has been named a National Merit Scholarship recipient, one of 39 from Wisconsin and among 10,000 semi finalists nationwide. The four year award supports study at the University of Wisconsin with an average value around $4,500. Petersen is the son of Mr and Mrs Roy Petersen and earns the first Merit Scholarship for the Brodhead community.
MADISON The Teamsters strike halting over 100 million dollars in building work pauses for Gov. Nelson to return for a Friday conference. About 120 Local 695 truck drivers, many with pre mixed concrete firms, are paid 2.65 dollars hourly and seek a 66 cent raise yearly over three years in wages and benefits. The Wisconsin Employment Relations Board arranged the latest talks, which ended Tuesday.
Walter E. Laeser was installed as commander of Cecil Jones VFW post with Mrs. F. L. Buchschacher as auxiliary head. District officers from Janesville and Beloit assisted. future installs planned for Dr. Charles Miller and Joseph Viney. A 101 percent membership gain citation was awarded to Virgil Wilkins as past commander.
Chester K. Norton county Democratic chairman said he expects to release the official Monroe postmaster list later this week after word from Washington. The deadline for application was yesterday and Norton notes eight or nine have applied. Some have requested information on qualifications.
