Weekend Wisconsin accidents claim nine lives raising the traffic toll to 267 for 1973. Include head on collision on Wisconsin 13 near Mellen and multiple drownings in Racine County Fox River and Green Bay East River incidents.
White House Counsel John W. Dean III signals willingness to name fellow aides as Watergate probes widen. The Washington Post cites staffers saying Nixon was warned of possible involvement by Mitchell and Dean in wiretapping and coverup schemes. Liddy refuses to testify while Colson defends himself. Kleindienst may resign as probes continue. Easter Egg Roll draws thousands to the White House lawn.
Green County avoided the worst of a weekend rain deluge though outages hit electricity and telephone services. Rain totals reached 1.79 inches as streams spilled, the Pecatonica River rose to flood stage in Darlington, and weather threats including hail and tornado watches affected the region. Power line faults caused outages from Verona to Albany, while radio communications were briefly knocked out at the sheriff’s office. Local officials warned of continued repair work and flood-scarred conditions near Darlington and Monticello with high Sugar River levels and waterlogged roads. State Senator Raymond Johnson plans to attend the Lincoln Day party in Marcos, inviting local GOP engagement.
Severe storms and heavy rain flood northern Illinois along the Fox and Rock Rivers forcing hundreds from homes. A dam break at East Troy Wisconsin floods Fox River valleys while towns brace for possible record river crests as governors deploy National Guard and sandbag lines.
Wisconsin’s DMV study shows universal seat belt use could have reduced 1972 traffic deaths by 560 and prevented 8,055 injuries while easing 4,300 more injuries. Chief James N. Waydick notes 85.7 percent of belt wearers escaped injury versus 81.6 percent of non wearers in accidents.
Lt. Gov. Martin Schreiber will be the keynote speaker at the annual Dutch Treat dinner for Green Co officials at Marco's tomorrow night at 6 30 p m. He will discuss Alternate Care for the Elderly before about 100 attendees. State Sen. Gordon Roseleip will introduce him and Assemblyman Joe Tregoning will attend.
Monroe High School Kaybec Club members totaling 18 plus advisor Larry Larson and staff members Miss Martha Etter and Mrs. W. R. Schuetze arrived home at 6 30 p m Saturday after a week in Quebec Canada. Ruth Garner of Switzerland joined by bus from Monticello High School. Weather was mild with temperatures in the 60s and a rare rain on the trip home.
