A severe storm lashed Brown County and the southern Door Peninsula causing widespread damage to homes, trees, power lines, businesses, and farm buildings. Winds reached 55 mph with four injuries and no deaths reported as the system moved toward Lake Michigan. Southern Green Bay areas suffered the most damage.
Twenty one University of Wisconsin Teaching Assistants Association members were convicted of contempt of court and fined 250 dollars each for participating in a 3.5 week strike against the university. Judge William Sachtsen had enjoined the strike as a public employee ban violation and gave a choice of 30 days in jail or the fines. The strike ended April 11 with a new contract approval.
An attorney for Sen. Edward Kennedy asked the Massachusetts Supreme Court to order release of the transcript and judge's report from the Mary Jo Kopechne inquest. The petition seeks an order opening the record under Superior Court rules to ensure order and decorum in the public examination of the documents.
A Teamster official says leaders from 350 locals will gather in Washington to urge reopening wage negotiations with the industry. The plan targets repudiating a tentatively accepted national contract. Fitzsimmons declined comment. a Trucking Employers spokesman said no meeting was planned.
United States and Soviet delegates meet for SALT talks in Vienna, duration hour and 45 minutes, the longest session yet. No details released. Next meeting set for Monday at the American Embassy.
Nixon postal reform met tougher Senate Post Office Committee scrutiny as Sen Gale W McGee criticized Vice President Agnew for partisan remarks about the independent U S postal service. Agnew previously accused Democrats of stalling action on the administration plan.
Saigon reports six additional American aircraft lost on bombing and reconnaissance missions over Laos and near border areas. The toll over two days reaches 12 aircraft with two Americans killed, one missing and 10 wounded. Total U.S. losses since January 1, 1961 climb to 6,689. Paris peace talks hear Nixon’s troop withdrawal plan and responses from North Vietnam and the Viet Cong.
President Nixon ordered an end to future occupational and agricultural deferments and to fatherhood deferments and sought authority to halt student deferments. He urged Congress to switch to a nationwide lottery call and to push for an all-volunteer Army with higher pay and benefits, plus a review of military policies.
Impasse between Monroe School District teachers and the Monroe School Board on pay and benefits prompts mediation led by the State Labor Relations Board of Madison. No further statements issued as of now. The White House outlines deferment rules for current students and future enrollees if Congress grants discretionary authority to the President.

Monroe Police Chief warns merchants about Assembly Bill 996 governing sale of airplane glue to minors. The law bars sales to anyone under 16, requires display only in locked cases, and carries fines up to 100 dollars or 30 days in jail per violation.
Monroe Lions Club president Lowell Markwardt presented Cooper High School exchange students from Abilene with pins. Lions sponsored their bus trip to Madison and meals to thank Abilene Lions for hospitality during their stay.
More than 120 people attended a recognition dinner at Monroe Country Club honoring past presidents and charter members. 143 charter members were founded in 1924. 27 returned. Finley Barry and Marvis Vierthaler presented awards. past presidents received blazer crests and gold pins for the women. Al Babler emceed. Robert Marty saluted. Out of town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Roy Dodge Traverse City and Mr. and Mrs. Royal Karlen Monticello. Karlens are surviving charter members. Jim Forbes, with the club since 1929, received special recognition after being named Wisconsin Golfing Pro of the Year.
Across Wisconsin on Earth Day students and families organized vigils and cleanups from Lake Mendota to the Milwaukee River. Events included a Mass for the Earth at Marquette University a river cleanups campaign at UW stations and trash drives in Ripon and River Falls with local merchants funding can bounties.
Government forces suppress mutineers and Black Power rioters in Port of Spain as three are killed. Six U S Navy ships stand by to evacuate tourists if needed while the United States ships in small arms per island requests. Separately in New York the Nixon administration reportedly plans to supply Cambodia with automatic rifles captured in Vietnam. White House and State Department officials offered no confirmation or decisions.
About 20 members of Indiana University's Women’s Liberation Movement staged an Earth Day rally in Bloomington. Coeds dressed as witches danced in a circle and threw birth control pills at the crowd while chanting “Free our bodies, free our minds.” The protest delayed Sen. Gaylord Nelson’s antipollution speech as he conducted hearings on birth control pills.
