Badger briefs report two deaths Wednesday raise Wisconsin’s 1976 traffic toll to 183, compared with 185 on the same date last year. Lake Delton approves an ordinance allowing daily water show use of Lake Delton for a small seasonal fee.
The Orangeville School Board met in a busy session to canvass the April 10 election, reelect President Frank Rutter and Secretary John Enzinger, and set meeting dates. They approved a $50,000 educational fund bond and $10,000 building fund bond, hired Terry Miller as track coach, Brandon Cary as custodian, and approved sick leave for Tim Schirmer. Additional actions included bids for health insurance, two CETA workers, a $917 Presto metal shear, and budget planning by Superintendent Ray Mensendike. The last day of school is June 4 with possible snow-day adjustments.
Senate critic William Proxmire reserved congressional reception rooms for his wife Ellen Proxmire’s Washington Whirl Around tours about 30 times in five years. A rival guide and the assistant say the practice stopped six months ago after complaints. Proxmire says rooms were available to all groups and no impropriety occurred.
Dr. Robert B. Zajonc of the University of Michigan contends there is no evidence that television permissiveness or greater minority student participation caused falling pre college test scores. He cites family size and spacing as key factors.
The IRS offers an automatic two month filing extension for those who file Form 4868 before midnight with full estimated tax payment. Complete Form 1040 can wait until June 15. Refunds are not penalized for late filing. If due, interest at 7 percent applies and a 5 percent late payment penalty for over 10 percent underpayment.
Patricia Hearst, recovering at Sequoia Hospital, told FBI agents she witnessed a terrorist bombing. Marin County prosecutors say Hearst offered to name three SLA members in exchange for immunity, while William and Emily Harris face kidnapping charges in the Berkeley case.
The Monroe Parking Utility announced that starting Monday overdue fines will rise from $1 to $2. The grace period increases from three to five days, with tickets paid within that window remaining 25 cents. After five days the $2 fine applies.
Two Scotland Yard officers, Sgt. Donald Nicolson and Constable Hamish Gray, reported seeing two dark fins about 20 feet apart moving rapidly in Loch Ness. They logged the sighting as an unidentified object, initially thinking it was a distressed boat.
The Monroe Arts and Activities Center MAAC publicizes its plan to preserve the 1869 Old Methodist Church in Monroe by purchasing it for 100000 and placing it on the National Register.
