Congress unlikely to override President Ford's veto on a bill easing Hatch Act limits allowing federal employees to engage in political activity. Ford called politicizing the civil service intolerable as he rejected the act.
A powerful blast ripped through a government munition plant in Lapua killing at least 40 and injuring over 20, many women. The one story plant was leveled leaving only the concrete floor and twisted machinery. An official commission will investigate.
Washington AP report notes the government releases 2 dollar bills to mark Thomas Jefferson's birthday. By year end 400 million will be circulated, including 225 million today, with President Ford receiving the first from Treasury Secretary Simon. Jefferson appears on the front and back scenes include the Declaration signing.
Patricia Hearst faces a 90 day psychiatric evaluation as part of a federal case after a seven month jail term. She will be flown to Los Angeles for a pretrial hearing on state charges then to San Diego for the court ordered exam. Judge Oliver Carter indicated he may modify the 35 year sentence after the San Diego report.
Brodhead Charles Seichert suffered arm burns and leg pain after a live wire contact while a crew strings high line cables on West Sixth Avenue at 19th Street. He leaned against a truck when the cable roll touched a hot wire three blocks away. Seichert, son of the utility’s superintendent, was taken to St. Clare Hospital by Everson ambulance.
Monroe residents will hold clean up days on April 26 for areas north of 13th Street and May 3 for areas south of 13th Street. Large items such as stoves refrigerators washers and furniture may be left at the curb if out by 7 a.m. on the respective day. Used lumber and brush go separately to be burned at the County Landfill site.
Monroe FFA Chapter placed in multiple state judging events after a Saturday contest. Meats team won top honors among 41 schools. William Ludwig led as top individual judge with teammates seventh and eighth place finishes. Farm Management placed seventh with Kim Diedrick seventh individually. Dairy Cattle Judging placed 10th among 189 schools. Blanchardville and Monticello members earned top showings. Black Hawk finished 10th in farm mechanics with Dave Wehinger placing 10th individually.
Sunshine and warmth boost Wisconsin spring mood with 60s highs and possible showers. In Kaukauna two sisters, Melissa Bartels 3 and Bobby Jo 2, died in a two apartment blaze. a 6 month old, Donna, was rescued by neighbor Jerome Eppinger.
A single vehicle crash on Buckskin Road 11:30 p.m. Sunday damaged seventy feet of fencing belonging to Harold Swedlund. The northbound car driven by Calvin G. Wasserstrass, 20, Rt. 4, left the road and struck the fence. The vehicle sustained minor damage.
State Sen. Thomas Petri of Fond du Lac says he rented office space to the Udall campaign and donated the $300 rent to the county Republican party. He defended the decision as not discriminating against qualified renters despite political differences.
MAAC president Peg Stiles reports strong initial response to the pledge drive for the Old Methodist property. Ed Rufenacht leads a committee preparing final campaign materials while banks and the Monroe Chamber of Commerce host information. Pledges negotiable over one to three years, with materials and booklets available at local libraries and via mailed forms.
