Two Monroe area farmers and two veteran school administrators received special recognitions at the 18th annual FFA banquet in the high school M Room. Honorary chapter farmer degrees went to John W. Ruff and Herbert Huffman for their help with FFA work, while E. O. Evans and T. R. Holyoke received new Service to FFA Awards marking a local first.
A special meeting was called for 5 p m today to grant permission to the Monroe New Car and Truck Dealers Association to place cars on sidewalks around the square. The Board of Public Works met to interview a city engineer applicant from Milwaukee. the post has been vacant since Walter Ekum resigned.
Karl Drye received the Star Farmer award at the Monroe FFA chapter 18th annual parent son banquet held in the high school. Drye is chapter president emeritus and earned district and regional speaking honors and a major trophy for three years of FFA work. Other top trophy recipients included Robert Pick Jerrold Zuhlke Ralph Figi Jr Nathan Botteron and James Huffman.
Final financial statements filed with the county clerk show total expenditures of 1577.40 by two candidates in the county judge election on April 4. Elmer spent 999.37, with 151.35 from contributions. Peterson spent - details continue for municipal offices with per-candidate amounts for ward supervisors, aldermen, city attorney, and city clerk among others.
Two new officers will join the force bringing total strength to 13 men and one woman. Milton Wood and Stearns Ash, both 24, join from Whitewater State College and Newport, Rhode Island backgrounds. Wood served in the Army in Augsburg Germany and completed parachutist training at Fort Bragg. Ash was in the Air Force 1956 to 1960 and worked recently as a salesman.
Walter Streiff of New Glarus and County Board Chairman C. S. Pierce join Rep. Henry C. Schadeberg's panel to study flood control in the First District. The committee will review pending flood legislation and suggest measures for First District areas.
The Monroe chamber directors agreed to pay 200 of the 4th of July fireworks cost and seek sponsorship from the City Council. They also voted 25 to promote Monroe and June Dairy Day on a Jaycee raft race from Castle Rock to the Upper Dells. Vernon Schillinger secured member identification plaques.
Madison The Assembly rejected by 55 to 40 a plan to extend the State Traffic Patrol arrests beyond traffic offenses after more than an hour of debate. Supporters argued for a state police expansion while opponents warned of taxation and state-local authority clashes.
MADISON Wisconsin jobless benefits fell slightly last week with 63 497 workers filing claims including 4 612 new claims The total edged down from 63 935 the prior week and 5 421 new claims Wisconsin saw its peak unemployment in 1961 around mid February with 88.
Israel's attorney general Gideon Hausner defended Israel's right to try Adolf Eichmann arguing that neglecting the trial would let a crime with no precedent go unpunished. He rejected international court jurisdiction and warned that releasing Eichmann could require extradition from Argentina or a wartime impunity.
Faculty and PTA representatives will meet at 4 p.m. in the Monroe junior high library to discuss a disaster plan to protect students from natural disasters or enemy attack. Superintendent D. J. Huenink notes all teachers and city PTA groups are invited. Walter E. Drews and Mrs. Donald W. Springer will attend. Lincoln school has already initiated a student protection plan.
Monroe New Car and Truck Dealers Association members showcase 1961 car models this week during the Spring Auto Open House. Showrooms stay open evenings and will conclude with the Monroe CARnival of Bargains this Friday and Saturday. Buyers receive bonus certificates redeemable during the event. The program is sponsored by the dealers association and Monroe Chamber of Commerce retail committee.
Detroit report says John Dykstra was named president of Ford Motor Co replacing Henry Ford II after a brief McNamara interim. Dykstra, 62, a manufacturing head and former Hudson executive, has been with Ford since 1947 and hails from Steins Holland.
President Kennedy and West Germany's Chancellor Konrad Adenauer conferred for 90 minutes at the White House on ways to achieve greater unity in the NATO alliance. Secretary of State Rusk and Foreign Minister von Brentano attended the meeting.
Soviet officials announced Maj Yuri Gagarin completed an hour and 20 minute orbit in a Vostok craft, with a total air time of 1 hour 48 minutes. Western skeptics questioned the timing and pace of the claimed mission amid rival reports from London and Moscow. James Webb praised the achievement as U.S. space plans aimed at suborbital and later orbital efforts.
Washington officials stated at noon today that no U S tracking station has detected the Soviet spacecraft Moscow claimed orbited a man. The report notes no confirmation of the mission and no corroborating radar or telemetry.
