Norfolk Virginia witnessed a solemn funeral for General Douglas MacArthur an 84 year old veteran of the Army. Cannon fire taps and flag draped proceedings marked the ceremony as Jean MacArthur widow and son Arthur 26 mourned. His steel casket was laid in a crypt at the MacArthur Memorial with roots tracing to his mother’s birthplace.

Edward Smith Dies Last of Eleven Brothers in Cigar Fame
Edward G. Smith, 86, of Darlington, died at Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was the last survivor of the Mahlon Smith family’s Eleven Brothers, photographed for Dodgeville cigar box covers early in the century. Survived by three daughters, three sons, a sister, and 22 grandchildren. Services at Holy Rosary Church, Darlington, 9 a.m. Monday. Rosary service at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Stell funeral home.

Platteville Store Damaged by Fire on Third Floor
Extensive water and smoke damage resulted from a fire caused by defective wiring in a third floor apartment of the Uffelman department store in Platteville. The building is owned by Henry Uffelman. Firefighters worked about half an hour as Friday night shoppers looked on. A second floor apartment also sustained water damage.

St John's Members to Bid Pastor Farewell at Reception
More than 300 people are expected at a farewell reception for Rev. Paul H. Olm and his family at St. John's United Church of Christ tomorrow at 2 p.m. Olm resigned in February to join the Northeast Association of the Wisconsin Conference. He departs Monroe Wednesday and will move to Appleton, headquarters of the Northeast Association. Mrs. Olm and the family will stay in Monroe for the rest of the school year. Guests include Dr. and Mrs. Wilfred Evans of Sheboygan, with Evans serving as interim pastor until a new minister is chosen. Evans will assist Rev. Donald Storck, the current assistant pastor, who becomes associate pastor in August.

Governor Seeks Broad Repeal of Selective Sales Taxes

Fred Witt 74 a Sylvester Township native died yesterday of a heart attack while burning grass at his Elkhorn home. Born August 25, 1888 he was a carpenter and former farmer who moved to Elkhorn in 1953. Surviving are three sisters and two brothers.
