Swiss Army Officer Visits Relatives in Monroe

Lt. Fred Buhlmann of the Swiss Army returns from Korea after serving over ten months with the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission at Panmunjom. He visited relatives in Monroe before continuing to Omaha and Washington. He plans to work in insurance, watchmaking, or international fields and speaks German, French, and English.

Easter crowds fill Monroe churches and events

Easter Sunday drew crowds as Monroe residents enjoyed sunny 70 degree weather. St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed was nearly full for sunrise services led by Lyndon C. Viel, with music by Robert Koller and others. A community breakfast served 125 attendees, and two worship services at many churches reported full congregations. An Easter egg hunt for 200 children on the American Legion lawn entertained youngsters while Shrine clowns provided amusement.

Walworth Village Fire Defeated by Multicounty Crews

Firemen from seven communities battled a wind driven blaze that destroyed the Walworth Village tavern and restaurant, a barn, two sheds, and the old Springfield Hotel annex. Damage was around 50000 dollars. Water had to be brought in by milk trucks and tarpaulin tanks. Fire departments included Troy Burlington Elkhorn Lake Geneva East Center and Linn.

Rev Barton C Holloway 74 longtime Rockford district Methodist minister died in a drug convalescent home after a long illness. Born December 4, 1875 in Winslow Township, he married Maude Schoch in 1903 and served 37 years. Three Auto Mishaps Delay Arkansas Funeral

Albert A. Philpot 75, Arkansas farmer, died Friday prompting relatives from California and Texas to travel to Mena. An accident near Seymour, Texas critically injured his son Otis and left others unhurt. His other son A J Philpot and Alton Ray Philpot suffered head injuries in separate crashes. Mrs John Regan Madison Woman Dies at 67

Mrs John A Regan 67 of Madison died at home after long illness. Born in La Crosse she lived in Madison over 40 years and was a niece of Mrs Henry Brown and the late Mrs Bertha Burke of Monroe. Survived by husband Dr John A Regan a daughter Mrs Arthur Petersen a sister Mrs Bertha Ray and two grandchildren. Services were held at Blessed Sacrament Church Madison with burial in Resurrection Cemetery. Pallbearers named.

County Suspect Given Sentences

Malcolm Giles, 33, of Kalamazoo Michigan, admitted at least 40 burglaries in Wisconsin and Michigan and was sentenced in Manitowoc County to six concurrent terms for five breaking and entering counts and one auto theft. He received one to 10 years on each breaking and entering count and one to five years for auto theft. Giles faces additional charges in Argonne and was arrested in a Rhinelander hotel room. Sheriff Humbel noted ongoing investigations and a February arrest warrant.

Winslow Defeats Consolidation Plan in School Board Race

In Lena Winslow district voters produced a record turnout for anti consolidation candidates Harold Trumpy Clyde Schultz and Adolph Stalder Jr all winning three year terms on the seven member board with 781 787 and 753 votes. Opponents of the plan won over pro consolidation candidates Russell Cox Waldo Huneke and Ernest Stabenow with 726 672 and 642 votes. The outcome blocks consolidation for another year as five of seven board members oppose the plan and next year two seats will be filled. The affected Lena Winslow area would include Elroy McConnell Waddams Grove Lena and Winslow.
