Early today flames and smoke damaged the Fred Rieder home at 817 10th street. Two occupants escaped. two birds died. Fire chief H L Sickinger credited gas masks and wet water for saving the two story frame house after a smoldering pile of paper and sticks ignited in the basement. The fire began in a paper pile and spread via a wood partition and cold air ducts, taking over the dining room and kitchen before extinguished at 4 15 a m. Damages exceeded last year's total of 3766.
