Secretary Brannan told a House subcommittee that the defense need for abundant crops lacks guaranteed prices. He urged a better price support method than the current system, warning farmers may face profit losses if demand does not meet government production goals.
Swiss cheese dealers describe a grim market with demand near zero as government price floors support cheddar. Reports say 20 factories have switched to American production, with more considering conversion despite high costs and long transition.
Madison Wisconsin dairy markets showed little change with most products steady or weak. Non fat dry milk solids and evaporated milk remained steady while American cheese and Swiss markets softened amid limited demand and ample supplies. Creamery butter was unsettled then closed steady despite price fluctuations. Production rose seven percent from last week yet remained 36 percent below year ago levels. Fluid milk supplies were ample and diverted to other channels as demand varied.
Opening of bids for city school building contracts moved to Tuesday, April 17 at 7 30 p m due to the board of education April meeting. Thirty seven plan sets for the East and South school additions are out to bidders with strong local builder interest. A bullet-pierced helmet liner with two stars of Maj. Gen. William F. Dean was found March 29 in the Taejon region where he disappeared in action last July. The liner bears the U S 24th Division tarp leaf insignia. Recovery teams began a new search in the area. Dean earned the Medal of Honor for Taejon defense.
All officers of the Wisconsin cheese exchange were re elected at the annual meeting yesterday. Officers include R. W. The police and safer committee ordered twenty no parking signs to be placed in all city alleys. City ordinances permit short loading spots for trucks but prohibit parking of cars or trucks for other reasons. City Clerk G Soseman and Police Chief J H Scher were involved in the meeting.
Carl Jensen petitions the Clarno board of town canvassers for a recount of the first supervisor vote after alleging irregularities and illegalities in the conduct of the election. Incumbent Fred Wuthrich led 151 to 122 in unofficial results. Sheriff Salbran delivered sealed ballots to the county clerk as the canvass process begins.
Nearly 900 attended the 23rd Turn and Schwing exhibition at Turner hall last night. Four year old Nancy Krattiger stole the show with rolls cart wheels and head and hand stands, while the junior group and men and women classes demonstrated routines. Nancy began turning last October and is the daughter of Edwin and Mrs. Krattiger route 2. Her mother Helen Blumer of the Blumer Sisters is a noted Swiss American athlete. The junior group routines were directed by Mrs. Donald Alston assisted by Mrs. Krattiger. due to a back injury Mrs. Alston turned the junior leadership over to Mrs. Krattiger who then secured Mrs. Sebastian Laeser Jr as assistant.
Walter A. Becker 46, sheriff of Racine County, faces a drunken driving charge in a municipal court warrant. Becker was ordered to appear in court Monday after district attorney Herbert J. Mueller said a truck forced the vehicle off the road and witnesses later supported the warrant.
Indian officials questioned if Gen MacArthur has authority to bomb Manchuria bases under certain conditions and asked about Rayburn remarks on massing forces. President Truman discussed the world situation with George Marshall and Omar Bradley while White House officials avoided topic specifics.
