Ten Die in Fire At Jersey Home

Jersey Shore Pa Ten members of the Flock family including eight children and the grandmother Maude Blair perished when a two story frame house burned and exploded on the town's outskirts. Terance Flock 34 a truck driver died beside two of his children. Mrs Flock escaped with minor burns as the home burned to the ground.

Annual 4-H Speaking Contest Opens April 9

Miss Helen Green announced plans for the annual 4-H speaking contest. Junior contestants aged 10 to 14 will present three to five minutes while seniors aged 15 to 21 will deliver four to eight minutes. Monroe area juniors compete Wednesday at the Courthouse and New Glarus area juniors Thursday at New Glarus High School. Seniors and junior winners meet April 21 at Monticello High School after the contests begin at 8 p.m.

Tree Planter Reservations Open for Large Plantings

George Gramling assistant county agent reminds that county owned tree planter reservations must be made at the county extension office in the Courthouse. Planting groups with more than 1 000 plants will receive the planter this spring. Several farmers with 1 000 plus trees have not booked and may hinder routing. Monroe Chamber Set to Meet Monday in City Bank Room

Monroe Chamber of Commerce directors and members will hold their April meeting Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the public meeting room of the First National Bank. The retail committee meets Monday at noon in the Eugene hotel. A luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. April 14 to discuss the proposed Christmas Kickoff parade with Ted Sophie of Beloit Chamber explaining Beloit’s program. Lowell Markwardt and retail committee members are in charge of parade arrangements.

City Juvenile Admits To Charges of Theft

A Monroe juvenile was picked up by city police yesterday for allegedly taking $5.84 from an envelope under a milk bottle. The youth admitted the theft during questioning and was turned over to juvenile authorities.

Cheryl Crane, 14, stabbed John Stompanato in Miss Turner’s bedroom after he allegedly threatened the actress. Stompanato, linked to Mickey Cohen, died at the scene. Cheryl and Turner were taken to the Beverly Hills police station. Cheryl was placed in juvenile custody.

Easter Dance To Be Monday

A dinner for all attending the 9th annual Easter Ball will be at the Swiss Wheel restaurant at 7 p.m. Monday before the dance. The semi formal event starts at 9 p.m. at the Monroe Armory, sponsored by Co. K Green County's National Guard. Proceeds aid the summer encampment mess fund. Sgt Merle Roberson leads the grand march at 11 p.m. Roberson has been a top advance ticket seller. Red white and blue decor will adorn the Armory. Louis Calvit's 10 piece orchestra will perform.

Cancer Crusade Drives Fund to Support Cancer Fight

The American Cancer Society in Green County began its 15th annual Crusade this month with neighbor to neighbor drives for one week. Mrs. Ralph Bridge and Mrs. Burnette Painter were named leaders for the county effort which raised slightly more than $500. The local board lists officers and notes Green County’s high Crusade record and a three fold attack on cancer through research education and service with funds allocated accordingly.

The Monroe City Band and Monroe Lions Club announce their 5th annual Madcap Minstrel Show to be staged April 22 and 23 at 8 p m in the high school auditorium. Fire destroys Ace of Clubs restaurant and club in Madison

A 2 story building housing the Ace of Clubs restaurant and a night club was gutted by a two alarm fire driven by 30 mph winds. Damage around 175000. Banks end Saturday hours in Monroe with new weekday schedule

Monroe banks observed their final Saturday hours today as a new schedule takes effect Monday. Beginning next week banks will operate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., including Thursday afternoons, and Friday evening hours from 7 to 9. No Saturday banking will be offered.
