City crews began installing 116 curb meters in the center lanes of the Square aiming for completion today. The meters run one hour for five cents with a two hour limit and time is cumulative. Hours are 9 am to 6 pm weekdays and 9 am to 10 pm Saturdays.
Mayor Buehler presented a proposal for a trailer regulation ordinance covering construction, parking, health and fire safety. The council read Stoughton’s draft and debated safety standards. A Tuesday election canvass board was appointed to tally votes. New stop signs and licenses were approved. council set rules for tavern licenses, dog tying season, and a temporary 300 gallon fuel tank for Yellow Cab Co.
Monroe city officials moved to halt card playing for money and prize awards for shuffleboard and other gaming devices in taverns. The police and safety committee and mayor announced the order after adjournment. Schwaiger had issued it Saturday and discussed details with aldermen prior to approval.
Mrs. Jacob C. Huffman 82 of 920 21st avenue died at 3 am today after a yearlong heart ailment. She taught at Union church and DAR member. survived by daughter Ula Tyler, sister Mrs A N Crosby, brother Joseph Shank, and granddaughter. Mrs. Etta Mae Miller formerly Hickman died at St. Clare hospital Monroe after a lingering illness. Born August 12, 1874 in Jefferson township she was married to Isaac Miller March 12, 1896. She leaves her husband a daughter three sons two sisters eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending at Shriner Neushwander funeral home.
The Japanese maritime board said floating mines, believed to be from North Korea, killed 63 people, injured 50 and damaged about 2 000 homes along the coast over the last four months.
Sheriff says the partially buried skeleton may belong to a traveling sewing machine repairman last seen in May. The body was found by Haven sisters on a vacant lot near Argyle road. In Freeport, daylight saving was voted down by 3,488 against to 3,083 for, a 405-vote margin. The measure would have shifted clocks one hour ahead from the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in September across all 21 precincts.

Ben H. Reese, 62, will retire June 1 as managing editor of the Post-Dispatch. He will be succeeded by Raymond L. Crowley, the current city editor.
The 90 piece senior band and 60 piece concert orchestra performed Musical Varieties of Spring before a near capacity Monroe audience. Directed by Allan F Barnard they played classical works and band selections. Prof. Raymond R Dvorak led the high school band in Amparito Roca with guest conducting duties. An encore is set for tonight with a repeat performance. A trio will present Titl’s Serenade as a special. Ticket contest winners and band letters were announced during the program.
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to death by electric chair for aiding the Soviet Union in obtaining atomic bomb secrets. Judge Irving R. Kaufman set the week of May 21 for execution. Morton Sobell received 30 years, and David Greenglass faces sentencing. The judge called the acts a “dirty business” and harsher than murder.
Kenneth W. Stuart was elected president of Monroe Country Club at the annual meeting. He succeeds Brooks J. Dunwiddie who had served two terms. Rolland Etter was named vice president and Harold C. Heimann remains secretary treasurer. New directors elected were Robert Buehler Rudolph P. Regez and E. A. Ninneman with Buehler serving a two year vacancy and Regez and Ninneman taking three year terms. The meeting discussed last year’s activities and plans to enlarge and resurfacing the parking lot.
Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey director of selective service will address the Wisconsin American Legion convention in Wausau August 18 to 20 officials said. Commander Jerome Ost announced the invitation was accepted.
President Truman warned that the danger of a third world war remains. He urged efforts to prevent it and declined to comment on Rayburn’s Manchuria troop remarks, calling the speaker truthful. Rayburn spoke during debate on universal military training.
President Truman praised a senate resolution backing sending four additional army divisions to Western Europe. He spoke at a news conference and noted the victory despite earlier senate objections over further authority. The measure passed 69 to 21 with 42 Democrats and 27 Republicans voting for it.
Railroad stocks led a broad market advance with gains up to $3 a share. Other notable climbs included New York Central Santa Fe Nickel Plate Pennsylvania Sinclair Westinghouse Republic Steel Studebaker Zenith Radio and Radio Corp as virtually every sector rose.
Wisconsin legislators heard a list of six prominent citizens named by Senator Proxmire as examples of tax filing failures. Proxmire cited Rob ert L. Rote Monroe and others, claiming penalties were avoided despite underreporting income. The hearing on penalties for late state income tax returns followed an argument over naming individuals.
