Tragedy Strikes Daly Family As Friend Dies In Rockford Crash

Joseph John Winkler 52 of Rockford, chief engineer for Rockcote Paint), was killed in a three car collision in Rockford while en route to pick up a babysitter for the Daly children. He died at Rockford Memorial Hospital. The accident left two others injured. Dr. Daly, an eye surgeon, remains in critical condition after a bridge guardrail crash on Illinois Highway 70.

John B. Royer Dies at 77 in McConnell

John B. Royer 77 died at 4:15 a.m. in his McConnell home after a brief illness. He was born January 2, 1883 in Cedarville, married Alice Folgate in 1902, and lived south of McConnell before retiring to town in 1940. Survivors include his wife, son Eber, and two grandchildren. Services set for 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at McConnell EUB Church with burial in Salem Cemetery. graveside rites by Orangeville Masonic Lodge.

Pecatonica River Crest Recedes at Freeport Amid Flood Relief

The Pecatonica River crested at 16.35 feet in Freeport Saturday night and has fallen since. Early today water was down a foot, a few families evacuated to the YMCA, and flooding remains limited to east and north Freeport. Darlington is back to normal with no weekend rain.

Universal garbage plan eyed as advisory vote

The Board of Public Works floated estimated costs for a universal garbage collection plan to be decided by voters in an advisory refer endum tomorrow. Current charges total 25 dollars yearly including 15 for removal and 10 for recycling services. Under the universal plan the tax rate would rise about 1.66 per thousand assessed value with varying yearly costs by property value.

Four in State Meet Winners Selected At Music Festival

Four soloists in the district music festival at New Glarus were recommended for state competition. Nancy Sandridge led with three first places including a piano duet. Dutch Elm Cleanup Campaign Proves Successful

Monroe park and recreation director Robert Wells announced the Dutch Elm disease cleanup was highly successful. Volunteers from the Monroe Youth Council and park staff collected 12 loads of branches and brush, hauled to the city dump with trucks from Crandall Oil Co. and Trucks Inc. Reservations for tree spraying to prevent infection are still being accepted by calling 378, as the city plans a spring spraying program.
