A citywide mayoral and ward contest drew steady turnout under a bright April sun. By 1 p.m. 1 244 Monroe residents had voted, about 25 percent of eligible voters, far below the 1 643 tally at the 1960 spring election. 393 cast ballots in the first hour, versus 519 in 1960.
In view of high ballot interest, the Monroe Evening Times will provide telephone results coverage from 7 to 9 30 p m. Call No 3 will carry results for the mayor and Fifth Ward alderman races.
A noon figure of 961 and an 11 a.m. figure of 884 reflect turnout in Monroe with 4 810 registered voters, down 45 from last year. First Ward led turnout while Fifth Ward held most registered voters. Fourth Ward posted the lowest vote count by 1 p.m. Incumbent mayor Orville R Evans faced Victor N Schiller as polls opened at 9 a.m. with tabulation at the courthouse not required.
The Board of Public Works will accept quotations on new machinery for the sewage disposal plant until 4 p m Thursday. Rex N Eyler, chairman, said quotations will be opened at a special 5 p m meeting. A City Hall discussion covered the proposed aeration system. A City Council meeting is set for 7 30 p m tomorrow. Tonight’s meeting was postponed one day.
At Twin Lakes Wisconsin the McGuffey Reader dispute deepens as six of eleven Lakewood teachers are fired or resigning. Eighth grade teacher Doris Bannister says she and another teacher were dismissed at a school board meeting, with two more resigning and two planning to leave. The board clerk confirms four teachers will depart by year end, though not due to the McGuffey clash. A circuit court petition seeks ouster of four board members, alleging inefficiency and neglect in introducing the 1879 edition last fall, while state superintendent Angus Rothwell testifies.
The Monroe exchange students from Tallulah Louisiana are due at Monroe High School between 5 30 and 6 tonight. Adviser Mrs Herbert M Lenoir Ainsworth of Kentland Indiana arranged a last toll gate pickup with Wesley Dodge to meet the chartered bus. Judith Dodge, one of the students, is among those calling home from Louisville last night.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Wilbur Renk urged expanded agri business as a path to revive small Wisconsin cities. Speaking at Monroe Rotary Club he said 10 to 20 worker small plants could move farm and forest products toward manufacturing hubs and keep young people near home.
Monroe firefighters halted a grass fire on the east edge of Catholic Calvary cemetery near noon. Officials believe the blaze started from a nearby brush fire with no damage reported.
M P Peavy 86 planned to vote in Darlington to preserve a voting record begun in 1896 when he first ballot for alderman at Dodgeville. The retired publisher of the Darling ton Republican Journal, his spring elections streak spans 66 years as he approaches his 87th birthday.
Beir ut reports a Damascus broadcast claiming end to the Aleppo revolt by pro UAR army units. Ground air clashes persisted as mutineers called for a truce while the Damascus regime demanded surrender within 90 minutes. Col Luaay Atassi urged a ceasefire from Aleppo.
Nicholas deBorde Katzenbach, ex law professor and assistant attorney general, named by President Kennedy to succeed Byron White as No 2 in the Justice Department. White is to join the Supreme Court. Both nominations await Senate confirmation. Katzenbach, 40, was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford.
Dr. Ralph H. Wiley 45 died by a self-inflicted gunshot after being charged again with breaking and entering and theft in Waupaca County Wisconsin. Sheriff said Wiley admitted to past thefts and turned over goods before requesting solo drive to retrieve more. He leaves a widow and four children.
Pentagon officials stated General Thomas S. Power did not notify President Kennedy or top leaders when a false warning signal suggested U S missiles might be attacked. The incident near dawn on November 24 prompted Power to ready hundreds of bombers but no countdown began.
NASA sets the Centaur two stage rocket test from Cape Canaveral on Friday. The 107 foot craft will reach 300 miles altitude on a ballistic 15 minute suborbital flight over the Atlantic with no payload. The mission tests liquid hydrogen propulsion and first flight data since delays.
Madison Wisconsin cheddar cheese market shows irregular demand with light open market activity. Branches and regular outlets report movement in various cheddar grades with ample supplies and prices ranging from 34 to 38 cents per pound for blocks and related formats.
The Badger Regional Broodmobile will visit the Brodhead grade school gymnasium from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday. A 75 pint quota is set for the drive and residents of Brodhead Albany and Juda are urged to donate.
In New York, Elizabeth Taylor and Eddie Fisher announce their mutual decision to part after three years of marriage. Divorce proceedings will be pursued soon, ending a period of fan speculation over Taylor’s interest in Cleopatra co star Richard Burton. Burton, 36, is married to Sybil with two children and is living in London.
Mrs. Isabella C. Scharer 78 native of Adams Township and former Monroe resident died Sunday in Las Vegas Nevada. She lived in Las Vegas 15 years and was married Oct 22 1908 in Monroe to Edward H. Schafer. Surviving are two daughters five grandchildren and two great grandchildren and three brothers. Funeral services Thursday at 1 30 p m Shriner Neu shwander funeral home with Rev Paul H Olm officiating burial in Greenwood cemetery.
The Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance released figures for the 1960-61 school year showing total public school transportation costs of $17,550,931 covering 241,564 students. Elementary riders numbered 151,732 and high school riders 89,832, with state aids totaling $5,209,956.
Benny Kid Paret died after a brutal world welterweight title bout with Emile Griffith at Madison Square Garden on March 24. The 25 year old succumbed to brain injuries two weeks later amid rising debates in New York about boxing regulation and possible outlaw.
