A Dane County judge declared the University of Wisconsin teaching assistants strike of 18 days illegal. William Sachtjen found immediate irreparable harm to the university and authorized an injunction to halt the walkout and restore classes.
Union negotiators representing 750,000 postal workers planned talks after government officials floated a fresh wage proposal. The leaders would discuss the offer with AFL CIO president George Meany before resuming negotiations.
Milwaukee AP says negotiators for Wisconsin Electric Co and Wisconsin Natural Gas Co reached a tentative contract with Local 3 of the Utility Workers Union. The union will vote on the package Monday at South Hills Country Club, per Local President Charles J. Simpson.
In Belfast Catholic and Protestant crowds clashed with gasoline bombs and bottles as British troops used tear gas. Civilians with rifles appeared in several streets and about 20 shots were fired, including from a .22 caliber rifle. Troops fired tear gas around 25 times during the day’s most violent disturbance since last October.
Former Supreme Court Justice Arthur J. Goldberg won the New York Democratic nomination endorsement for governor but rejected the automatic ballot spot. He stated he would skip the primary advantage and circulate nominating petitions to enter the June 23 primary by voter petition.
North Vietnam and the Viet Cong accused the United States of dragging Laos and Cambodia into the Vietnam war at the 61st session of the Vietnam peace talks in Paris. Nguyen Minh Vy, acting head of the North Vietnamese delegation, said the Nixon administration is determined to continue the war and has extended it to the entire Indochinese peninsula.
The Monroe High School Symphonic Band presents its Second Annual Pops Concert in the Senior High Gym on April 8 at 8 p.m. featuring James Latimer University of Wisconsin percussion instructor and Louis Bellson tribute pieces. The program includes Ellington portraits, Broadway selections, and a percussion‑driven second half directed by Miss Patricia Sandley with Latimer as soloist on Thundering Drums. Tickets are available from band members or at the door.
Cambodia declared that American forces in South Vietnam have no right of pursuit into Cambodia. The government protested violations of Cambodian territory and said it remains neutral while reports say South Vietnamese forces crossed into Cambodia with U S air support. Negotiators for the Teamsters and Trucking Employers Inc. haggle over about $3 billion in wage demands as 425,000 Teamsters in dozens of cities continue strikes. Some progress noted, while many drivers stay on the job and contracts may retroactively date to the old pact.

At the Green County annual banquet at Marco's Supper Club guest speaker Robert Mortensen of the Wisconsin County Boards Association outlined Nixon era welfare ideas being studied by state committees. He urged counties gain more control over welfare rules as they fund a large share of costs. Retiring board member Joshua Hoesly received a plaque for 20 years service, after roles on multiple committees. Assemblyman Joseph Tregonning Senator Gordon Roseleip and Wilmer Struebing attended and Myron Jeglum hosted. Mortensen and Mrs Mortensen received cheese and a wooden tray as tokens.
The Green County Farmco Cooperative held its annual dinner and awards at Monroe Senior High School gymnasium. Virgil Deininger was elected to replace retiring director Glenn Roderick, with Earl Feldt and Marvin Siedschlag reappointed. Six service pins were awarded including 25 years to Lois Miller and 10 year pins to Sharon Kuhse Lucille Gunderson and Richard Hanson, plus five year pins to James Matley and Ervin Spring. Ross Gilfillan spoke on FS services and cooperative history, with entertainment by James Toby Davis. Total assets stood at 1 056 828.78 and liabilities at 122 099.83.
