Wunch-Brown Wedding in Local Home Ceremony

Lena Wunch and Charles Brown were married Tuesday at 8 pm at the bride’s home. Rev H L Hoover officiated after songs by Mrs John Medcalf and Mrs Hoover, with bride in white carrying white roses. Only relatives and intimate friends attended. they will visit Portland and the beach before settling in Deer Island Oregon.

Elect Officers of Court of Honor at Regular Meeting

The Court of Honor elected J. G. Pierceall as Chancellor and T. B. Hayden as V Chancellor among others at their Monday session. They plan a 17th anniversary picnic at the fair grounds on Wednesday the 16th of September, with members and families bringing dinner and supper. A subscription push urges paying dues to receive three big magazines.

Monroe City Public School Opens Amid Rainy Enrolment

The Monroe City Public School opened Monday with small enrollment due to rain. By Wednesday the high school had 112 students, grades 196, and the consolidated school 33, totaling 341. Upgrades include a modern lab, new benches, sinks, water, drinking fountains, and sanitary facilities. Superintendent M. D. Boucher leads the staff with high school teachers Misses Bess Chaney, Bracy Cornett, Caroline Larson, Daphne Crawford, and Mary Springer, and grade teachers Misses Georgia Vaughn, Mary Neale, Evalyn Hornback, Lenna Evans, Leta Evans, Evodia Gentry.

Italian Cardinal Giacomo Della Chiesa was elected pope on Thursday to succeed the late Pius. He was coronated as Benedict XV on Sunday and is 59. Made Cardinal May 25, 1914, he called for prayers for peace in Europe after his first appearance.

War Tax Plan Urges $100 Million For War Emergency

President Wilson appealed to Congress on Friday to raise 100 million dollars through a war tax to fund the United States during the European conflict. The levy addresses the current emergency caused by a lack of imports and will be temporary.

Methodist Conference High on Forward Movement and New Appointments

The ninety eighth annual Missouri Conference session closed at St Joseph with Bishop Hendrix presiding. Increased assessments were approved, and an efficiency institute is planned for Moberly on Oct 12-13. The 1915 session will be in Chillicothe and the Centennial in Fayette in 1916. appointments in Hannibal District include W P Wynn and C V Lanius among others with numerous circuit and station assignments. Additional preachers were assigned to Halleyville, Troy, Alton, Maryville, Savannah, Bedford, Edgerton, Handley, Jamesport, Glasgow, Huntsville, and Polo.
