Vandiver Delivers Hot Speech on Hadley at Opera House
Friday afternoon Hon. W. D. Vandiver Missouri State Insurance Commissioner gave a pointed address at the opera house. The bride daughter of W B Arnold and the groom a poultry business partner were married by Rev B D Weeks. A bridal breakfast followed at the groom’s parents home with guests sending gifts and congratulations before the couple departed for Colorado.

Grant as Col. Guarding Salt River Bridge Story
The reminiscence recalls an early Civil War moment with General Ulysses S. Grant while he led troops guarding the H and St Joseph Bridge over Salt River near Hunnewell. Uncle Jimmie Spalding and Mrs. John Cox witnessed Grant declare he would join the Southern army if the North fought only to free the negro. The anecdote surfaced as Spalding visited town during Senator Stone’s speech, which reportedly swayed several local leaders and weakened Folk faction support.

Which Sign Remains After 53 Years on Wall?
In 1855 Samuel L Leake painted a B F Hixson sign on a brick wall at the southeast corner of North Main and Byrd streets while employed by Joshua Hardy, uncle of John Hardy. Now, 53 years later, the same sign is still visible from the opposite street side, prompting the question which sign endures.
