Obituary of J. M. Smith of Monroe City and Marion County
J. M. Smith born March 6 1827 in Belmont Ohio, lived much of life in Ohio and Missouri. He married Ellen Simms in 1834, had five children, later wed Sarah McDaniel. ten years ago moved to Monroe City. After a long illness he died January 12 1902, funeral January 14 conducted by I W Read and J H Riffe.

Monroe City Fire Destroys Electric Plant and Bonding Call
At 2:30 a m the Monroe City Electric Light and Power Co building burned after a roof blaze spread front corner. Firefighters and residents faced collapsing steam pipes and a failing bell rope as the small plant succumbed. Loss around 4000 dollars, partially insured, with calls for city to bond and build a new plant. Also notes the death of Mrs Calista Cassady in Monroe City Mo aged 76 years.
