February 1902 brings Monroe County residents to a mass meeting at City Hall to decide whether to fund a new city electric plant. The notice warns of darkness and unsafe streets if ignored, urging unanimous support for bonds and improved lighting. The piece also notes local political and social impacts and praises Miss Wiedhorn’s violin recital at the opera house.
Friends are invited to an open session of the Loyal Temperance Legion Friday evening February 14 at 7 30 at the Holiness Church. Miss Bessie Asbury and Miss Eva Powell plan to depart later in the week for Chicago markets to buy for J J Rogers department store with Asbury managing fancy goods and Powell the millinery selections.
Francis W Westhoff, twenty, died at his parents home at 0 30 pm Sunday after years of consumption. Born in the city he spent almost all his life here and was noted for integrity and diligence. Funeral services by Rev Fr D F Sullivan were held at Holy Rosary church at 10:00 am Tuesday, burial followed in consecrated grounds.
Turk Hicks from Cuovington Ky visits sister Mrs Eugene Mastin north of the city. Miss Lena Rightmire and Miss Clara Foster lure Warren Mastin home from school for a surprise party. Eighteen couples attend, with games music and a hearty, country style refreshment spread, all hosted by Mrs Mastin who proves herself an apt hostess.
The Masque Ball hosted by the M E S Club at the Opera House drew about a hundred couples. Palmyra and nearby towns sent attendees while the gallery watched Palmyra orchestra music and varied costumes. Winners received gold pieces, supper was served, and Bennett suffered non serious wounds with stitches. no arrests reported. Ebenezer Baptist Church noted from Marion county.
A Monroe City mass meeting is urged to back a city ownership proposition to bring electric service. Last Friday a social gathering at Mr. and Mrs. Able Boarman near Ely featured music, dancing, and refreshments as residents from Monroe City Hassard Hatch Ely and Huntington attended before dawn.
Two young men, Will Bennett and Ed Snyder, clashed at Ebenezer church last night. Snyder drew a knife and slashed Bennett in multiple locations during the altercation.
The Aberdeen Antus heifer Black Cap Judy sold at Dexter Park Amphitheatre Union Stock Yards to C H Gardner of Blandinsville Illinois for 864000. This sets a record high female price across breeds since 1574. Missie a Shorthorn heifer fetched 6000 in Chicago last December.
George P Johnston hosted a small parlor hop with invited friends and guests to spend an evening in light social amusement. The group included Minnie Pinks Pearl Bohrer Bertha Nichols Ellen Walker Maud Hawkins Edwin Walker Manco Anderson Theo Lettie and Met ler Clark. Supper featured showcased Mrs Johnston as a hospitable hostess.

Misc notes include school cheer by German boy Jakey and local peach crop mentions. Funeral reports touch Missouri Illinois and Albert Yates in New Mexico.
