Grasshoppers devastate crops but county faces hope

J R Ratekin reports grasshopper swarms marching from east to west across Cass County, devouring crops and prompting farmers to brace for losses. Residents note pockets of damage vary, while others anticipate a rebound if pests depart by fall. Local figures like R G Doom report sizable acreage already damaged, yet many communities push to plant again despite fear.

Grass hoppers devastate Iowa crops in June 1875

Supnanpoau Iowa reports a sudden invasion of grass hoppers covering ground and fences. Within three hours they devoured corn knee-high fields and left them bare, with swarms stretching eight to ten miles on both sides. The insects move from a south east direction toward the northwest, possibly the same jay hawkers referenced by the Grangers.

Hoppers Raid Taylor County Farmlands and Gardens

Farmers in Warren and adjoining counties report an unusually cool spring followed by a hopper invasion. The swarms arrived in a few hours, consuming corn down to stumps and devouring cabbage potatoes radishes and beans while sparing some crops. They departed after a brief but widespread crop damage, leaving fields noisy and scarred by the swarm.

Grange Supper and Odd Tales From Centre Grove 1875

Centre Grove notes recall a June 21 1875 Grange supper with Worthy Master Josiah Johnson and Worthy Secretary G W Beckner. Visitors Higgins Vandevere and others arrive. an extended table feast precedes an essay on “The Object of the Grange” and brief remarks. Then miscellaneous notes include lettuce dishes, cabbage growing tips, scarlet fever remedies, and seed predation by birds with a suggested sulfuric soak for seeds.

In a brief letter the writer E. McCormick expresses hope for plentiful showers and abundant success for the welcome old Review. He notes showers have been spotty east of the Missouri River and signs off as a long-time subscriber.

Proceedings of the Warren County Board of Supervisors 1875

The first regular session opened June 14 1875 at Monmouth with R W Porter named temporary chairman and E Mitchell elected permanent chair. Committees on credentials claims finance and others were formed. reports on taxes public buildings auditing and county farm were heard and orders issued. a jail improvement proposal and a jail only vote plan were discussed. county officers accounts and salaries were reviewed and approved for various sums including Donnell Dryden and the sheriff. a court house and jail funding stance was refined for future elections.
