The Senate Finance Committee releases its report outlining proposed tariff changes. Officials expect debate on duties, exemptions, and revenue impacts as part of fiscal policy adjustments.
Washington June 19. The tariff bill was reported to the Senate from the finance committee. Changes focus on sugar maple sugar bounty 2 cents per pound with 50 pound minimum and penalties for fraud. Substantial revisions appear across earthenware metal agricultural and sundries schedules plus flax hemp and jute. Several duties lowered while others raised on foods textiles and manufactured goods.
Reports from Elkland Pennsylvania and Osceola describe a cloud burst flooding Holdenbrook with two drownings Mrs Tripp and Miss Mary Thompson bodies unrecovered. A railway trestle failed and Tannerytown lay ruined. Kansas cyclone hit Logan wrecking farms and killing one man. Doylestown Ohio storm damaged the Catholic church and wounded Mrs Lyon, while Fred Dies was killed by lightning near Rogues Hollow.
Nominations announced in multiple states as party conventions pick candidates for Congress. Patton chosen in Illinois Thirteenth, Snow in Ninth, Hitt renominated in Sixth, Mansur and Scranton secure renomination, Hatch renominated in First Missouri, Scott named for Crawford County in Pennsylvania. Grover Cleveland backed for 1892.
New York June 19 Surrogate James H. Tuthill of Suffolk County rules William M. Merriam competent to make a will and probate is granted. Merriam left his fortune to the United States Government claiming it could afford to fight relatives. Four sisters from Connecticut contested the will. Money and bonds were found hidden in the room after his death. The opponents will seek to overturn the surrogate’s decision.
Cleveland businesses face fuel shortages as the railway tie up by striking switchmen disrupts operations. Officials warn 20,000 may lose work if the strike endures and yards remain blocked with freight cars.
Reading Pennsylvania June 19 brakemen warned to leave the Order of Railway Brakemen or quit the service of the Reading railroad. Ohio Democratic Convention set Springfield August 26 and 27 Columbus June 1 percent
The Senate approved the free coinage of standard silver and gold bullion by a large vote and established that the resulting coins and certificates shall be legal tender for all debts public and private. The measure defines the unit as the dollar with standards for silver and gold coinage and sets redemption rules and treasury funding. The House considered the bill after Senate passage and other news items followed, including a school Bible case in Wisconsin and education decrees in Mexico.
The National convention of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics elected officers led by National Councilor George H. Bartlett. A plan to merge with the Senior Order, which has about 60,000 members, was discussed with a one year to effect the union. Cleveland will host the next meeting.
A freight crew reports Lordsburg New Mexico is in a fever over a barefoot cowboy who fled a ranch north of Sepore after Indians attacked and killed several men. He says about thirty Indians carried out the assault at 10 o clock Monday night as the cowboys slept. Possees formed at Lordsburg and Deming to pursue the attackers. Sepore lies 130 miles west of El Paso.
Mrs E G Hudson a famed adventuress commits suicide at Miss Gass's boarding house on East Eighteenth Street New York Tuesday morning. At about 45 she gained notoriety as a swindler and hotel operator over fifteen to twenty years with arrests in Boston and other cities and multiple imprisonments. Her financial troubles and mounting board bills preceded the death.
Toronto a terrible accident on the Canadian Pacific Railway between Claremont and Myrtle left five residents of the city dead after a washout. The crew included John Wanless bridge inspector James Alton engineer F Oliver fireman and two sectionmen Lott and Moriarty. The engine plunged into the washout and all aboard were drowned.

Hampuro June 19 three desperate men with a rope lassoed a Kansas City capitalist, J. H. Stewart, forcing him to sign over a $1000 check. Stewart, hurt by the assault, rode in a buggy when the attack occurred amid a land title dispute involving the Goldens and Stewart’s company.
