Calamity Sweeps Town as Cyclone Destroys Glenwood

Bradshaw Nebraska reports say a cyclonelast Tuesday night wiped out the hamlet of Bradshaw with meager details. Six killed and twenty five injured amid downed telegraph lines, heavy rain hail and stock losses. Governor Thayer orders State troops to Bradshaw for duty.

Life convict Bernhard Heeney dies before release

Bernhard Heeney, a life convict whose sentence Governor Fifer commuted last week, died of heart disease Tuesday at the penitentiary. He was to be freed next October and reportedly expressed joy about his prospects.

Wisconsin Lutherans Demand Repeal of Bennett Law

Milwaukee, Wis June 5 nearly 700 delegates from Lutheran and other groups attended an Anti Bennett Law convention. Christian Koerner chaired the meeting with speeches by Colzhausen Krez and Andersen. The platform declares support for public schools but urges repeal to protect civil and religious liberty and parental choice. Committees will assess candidates on the law and back only absolute repeal.

Protest by New York Importers Against McKinley Tariff

A delegation of about 150 importers from New York City and other cities appeared before the Senate finance committee to protest the McKinley tariff bill. They urged relief for common people and opposed duties on key imported and raw materials. The session adjourned to the crowded Senate reception room as the protest was read and plans for further action were outlined.

Pensioners Must Wait As Pension Fund Nears Exhaustion

The Indianapolis pension fund for army retirees is nearly exhausted with June payments only covering a day and a half. All credits except notices already sent will wait until July 1, when the new appropriation becomes available. About 10,000 pensioners may be delayed if funds run short, amid rising names on the rolls from 44,606 to 49,750.

English syndicate expands Washburn Mills capacity

The English syndicate controlling Pillsbury and Washburn mills in Minneapolis leased mills I B and C, boosting daily capacity to over 22,000 barrels. Pillsbury says the deal adds $6,000,000 to Minneapolis capital and strengthens flour production leadership.
