Oregon hops yield a top quality crop with prices rising daily as European buyers lead demand. High School Opens with 31 Pupils in First Day

The new high school started Monday with 31 registrants, a number expected to rise to 50 next week. Seventeen freshmen have registered, aided by a new card system that speeds study selection and schedules. Five courses are offered Mathematics History Latin Industry Science with English as a major and two to three additional studies. Freshmen favor English Mathematics History and Science while avoiding Latin Bookkeeping or Agriculture. Outside work in music earns credit. seven old students and seven freshmen seek music credit. Classes convened Tuesday with regular recitations Wednesday.

Fire destroys new campus building at Eugene

Fire discovered at 2 15 this morning gutted a 600 dollar wooden structure on the university campus in Eugene. Firemen battled flames that spread to nearby chemical and explosives outbuildings as McClure Hall faced danger. Cause traced to spontaneous combustion of painter materials. Dormitory students aided the effort.

City council approves charter amendment to form road district

The council, lacking a quorum Tuesday, adjourned to Wednesday and then passed a charter amendment to create a separate road district within the city limits. A street crossing request was referred to the street committee and the recorder was authorized to order voter registration supplies. The next meeting is set for October 14, 1913 at 8 p.m.

Double hop yard wedding ties couples by harvest end

In Chemawa Oregon on September 24 a double wedding closed the hop harvest at the Simon yard. Lillian Baker and E B Baker wed Richard N Reed while Mary Peterman married another groom. Rev C H Barker officiated as an arch of hop baskets framed the ceremony with about 300 hoppickers and Warm Spring Indians in attendance.
