Oregon Normal marks record fall enrollment
Three hundred seventy five students attend the first chapel of the fall semester with a total registration reaching three hundred eighty five, the highest in Oregon Normal history. The training school opens Monday the eighteenth and Mr. Pittman will begin state institutes Sunday. Miss Arbuthnot to attend The Dalles institute. Faculty reception planned on campus Saturday with a fuller report next week.

Bad Break Sues for FeMur Bone Injury in Curious Step
C W Leonard suffered a broken femur when stepping from a passenger coach of the I M A R as the engine started Monday morning. Doctors from Monmouth and Independence said the hip socket joint was broken in a peculiar way requiring time to mend. The railway company denied blame. Leonard said it was an accident from his usual exit method.

The Monmouth fair will be held at the high school gym this Saturday. Displays cover fruits vegetables grains grasses pigs poultry art and needlework plus boys and girls club projects. A grand auto parade starts at 10 30 with free coffee sandwiches and ice cream for all.

Paving Men Arrive to Start City Work Next Week

Passing Auto Kills Old Man in Dallas Street
C C Hatch of Dallas was killed Sunday when Weldon Black or to save time made a shortcut at a corner. Hatch started to cross and the car struck him with fatal force. Black claimed he paused to dodge but the impact was fatal. A corner sign warns drivers to make the full turn.

Moonlit power outage sparks Independence street dance
Last Wednesday evening a moonlit blackout left the city without electricity until 10:80. Candles and kerosene lamps lit the town as a Firemen's orchestra from Salem played for locals from Monmouth Dallas Falls City and nearby. Another dance is planned for tonight.

Hop Growers’ Troubles Threaten Record Crop
Hops along the river suffer from rain followed by heat causing abandonment of acres and a threatened crop. Some growers with dryer access or mold-free land may gain, as spoiled hops turn from heavy to worse in the season.
Church Services Resume Next Sunday With Substitute Speaker
Services in the Baptist church will be resumed next Sunday morning and evening and continued through the school year. Rev Pollard will not be present until next week but a capable young substitute will be on hand Sunday and all are invited to hear him. E C Cole had business in Portland Monday.
