Fire alarms answer moss fire at Main Street house
A severe wind drove flames from moss on a Main Street house causing alarm. Mrs Keyt spotted the fire with help from girl students and local residents who used pails while ladder crews aided. A second alarm followed when the Monmouth Improvement Assn building chimney ignited but was quickly checked.

Bottle with pupil list found by excavation at Monmouth school grounds
Workmen uncovered a bottle at the root of a tree during the Normal addition excavation. Inside was a paper listing Monmouth seventh graders who planted the tree in April 1909 in honor of Longfellow. G. Griffin saved the document and brought it to the Herald. Roma G. Stafford was the teacher. Names include Clarence Daniel, Velma Heffley, Douglas Parkes, and others. Sunny Slope district elected Reeta Hamar as school clerk after 17 years of service, replacing Vardaman Fishback. Alleged district discontent centered on a $5 monthly teacher raise from $45 to $50. Miss Rose Page previously taught at Yamhill. Miss Hattie Newman succeeds.

County Commencement Rivalry at Rickreall Eighth Grade
Monmouth and Falls City vied for the largest class at Rickreall county eighth grade commencement with Monmouth slightly ahead. State Supt Churchill handed out diplomas and urged continued education drawing on Senator J K Gill as an example of self taught learning. An afternoon ball game saw the soldier boys beat a county selection 10 to 8, showing strong practice during drills.

No Institute This Summer Ends Polk County Institute
The county will not hold its annual Teacher’s Institute this year and will credit teachers who attend the National Educational Association meeting. Lam joins Polk County Institute with the Portland meeting as a county favor, endorsed by J. A. Churchill. Monmouth high school claimed the Rickreal picnic running trophy by default after traveling to Rickreal last Saturday with no contest held. The prize will remain theirs if it is repeated in a second consecutive year.

Water supply stressed by city pump outages
Over two weeks the city pump serving the water system failed twice, each shutdown lasting 36 hours. The latest outage depleted reservoir reserves and left the city without water Sunday morning. The council discussed adding shallow or a deep well and tying to Independence mains to boost supply.

Hill limps after runaway wagon and sprained ankle
Dale Hill suffered a sprained ankle when a runaway wagon crashed into a dryer and halted after a headlong chase on East Main Street.
