The six week Summer School runs from June 21 to July? with enrollment June 21 and classes starting June 22. Regular faculty teach most courses plus special methods for grade levels rural schools and administrators. Prominent speakers will lecture. President Ackerman to speak at Mountain View. Faculty dinner at the Dormitory. National Week of Song observed with daily chapel programs and community singing opportunities.

Baby Mary Riddell dies of flu with meningitis
The Monmouth area reports one flu victim, two month old Mary Betty Riddell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Riddell. The infant contracted influenza, developed spinal meningitis, and died on Sunday. Her family mourns the loss.

Paul Carpenter Named Polk County Agricultural Agent
Paul Carpenter, former secretary treasurer of the Helena Dairy Products Company, is named Polk County agricultural agent and will begin March 1. The appointment follows a three month search by the Agricultural College and a Polk County Farm Bureau committee. Carpenter has broad farming and agent experience in Minnesota North Dakota Montana and is described as energetic capable and successful by multiple officials.

Local Family Visits and Fire Damages Hit Monmouth Area
Mr and Mrs B W Strong entertained a grandson from Frank Strong of Gresham this week. Misses Hislop and Gaylord spent last weekend in Silverton and returned Sunday evening. A fire on the E Hewitt farm in Luchiajmute valley burned last Sunday night destroying canned fruit and some furniture. the house insured for 500 dollars. Hanley Harman Cecil Price and families visited Monmouth Tuesday.

Interchurch Move Ment Leaders to Attend Portland Pastor Conference
More than 450 Oregon pastors will attend the Pastor's Conference in Portland March 3 4 and 6 under the Harvard Plan. Lodging and breakfast will be arranged by the Portland City Church Federation with lodging provided by local members. Transportation costs are covered by the Interchurch World Movement and local congregations help defray incidental travel expenses. Ralph E Diffendorfer will help lead surveys in the United States and overseas addressing city life migrant workers and racial groups including Negroes Orientals Spaniards Indians and mountain people.

Monmouth Flu Lifts. Schools Return and Church Services Resume
Flu conditions in Monmouth have improved and the ban on gatherings lifted. Normal school sessions resumed Tuesday with the city largely free of illness though scattered cases remain. Most cases were light but recovery is slow and precautions advised. About 100 cases were reported at the epidemic’s peak.

Monmouth Starts Gravity Water Line Construction
The first earth was turned Wednesday on Monmouths new gravity water system. contractor Charles T Parker of Oregon City arrived Tuesday and began work on the west end, with intake delayed due to flu. Parker plans system completion by May and says pipe will arrive from Falls City Fern Crossing Bridgeport and Monmouth. The city may use eminent domain, but most farmers welcome the line for water access, and crops will be compensated for damage.

Derby Family Moves to Lorence House
In Their Own Home Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Derby and small daughter are now domiciled in the Lorence house north of the hardware store. Mr. Derby, previously quarantined for small pox at Boothby home, has recovered and may not resume bus line management for a week or two. Miss Brenton and Miss Poley visited Corvallis on Saturday and Sunday. Poley fills Miss Mills vacancy while she recuperates.

Boy Born to Mr and Mrs Milton Hoyser in Salem Area
A son named Robert Clark Hoyser was born February 11 to Mr and Mrs Milton Hoyser. The Hoysers live across the river from Independence on Route 8 out of Salem, formerly near Monmouth, and are still regarded as home folks.
