Chas Goodman Appointed Monmouth Roadmaster
Chas Goodman is named supervisor of roads for Monmouth under a new law creating city road districts. He oversees improvements on county roads within city limits including Main street east and west and Monmouth avenue. Dist 18 includes Monmouth. 1918 funds total $893.75. County court aims to preserve funds for hard surfacing as state highway plans progress. Judge Kirkpatrick believes state work may occur this year.

Two Monmouth figures dead in Oregon area burials
Obituaries from Monmouth and nearby regions report the deaths of Lather Ground and John F. Smith. Ground, a longtime Monmouth resident and former Polk county surveyor, died after a long illness in Salem at age 74. Smith, a Mistletoe district resident born in 1852, died following a Portland hospital operation. Funeral services were held in Monmouth with distinguished attendance.

County agriculturist council formed in Polk County meeting
A Polk County meeting in Dallas organized the County Agricultural Council with Mr P. O. Powell as president and Miss Maggie Butler and L. P. Gilmore among officers. About 100 representatives from Monmouth attended as 24 county centers were planned to coordinate county agriculture, home economics and youth programs. Prof Brewster was to visit Monmouth to discuss poultry services and farm labor planning.

Suver’s Champion Knitter Aims To Beat Time
Suver auxiliary of the Red Cross organized by the Monmouth branch boasts the state champion knitter Mrs. E. L. Baker who knitted a sack of fine yarn in 8 hours 1 minute. She plans a new attempt to knit a sock in under 8 hours, noting coarse yarn would speed the task. Mrs. Ostien oversees Red Cross work and sent two large boxes Wednesday.

Red Cross Sees Growth in Monmouth County
