Captain F. A. Barker of Salem's 1st Infantry acts as advance agent for a Monmouth recruiting party arriving soon. The essay contest on February 20 asks What are the benefits of enlistment in the U S Army with national and local prize money. Monmouth prizes include 2.50 from several local businesses. Mrs Martha J Cosper, a Polk County pioneer, died at 77, born in Illinois, moved to Oregon in 1847.

Kilen died at age forty in this city after years of invalid life, cremated in Portland. she leaves sisters in Silverton and Woodburn. Dorsey Turner filed a lynx skin for a state bounty. another lynx carcass was presented but not accepted for filing. The Dallas Odd Fellows lodge paid off its debt and burned the last note during a commemorative meeting.

Lawyer Phillip Boche Dies in Lakeview Oregon
News of the death of Phillip F A Boche formerly a Portland lawyer reached Lakeview Oregon Saturday night. He died of pneumonia after returning to the city week ago and had practiced in Portland in the firm Joseph Haney for four years before moving to Lakeview three years ago to start his own practice. He leaves a widow and a small son at Lakeview and his mother at Monmouth.
