The third term of the Normal school opened with a 15 percent attendance increase beyond expectations. Faculty are proofreading the forthcoming catalogue. A preliminary contest chose Miss Arline Bunch as Normal representative for the State Oratorical contest with Ray Penney as alternate. Readers included Irene Dunlop Nellie Johnson Evadna Hager Ruth Phelps Mian Robinson Margaret Mann Georgia Dilley Rhoda Wicklam Mrs Maud Graham and Roy Penney Fleming Oleman. The Dallas school officers convention endorsed the May 21 millage bill. A planned Saturday night party was postponed due to illness among committee members.

Court Raises Salaries for County Deputies in 1920

The county court ordered higher salaries for deputies in 1920 affecting the sheriff and clerk offices but not assessor or school superintendent. Increases include sheriff first deputy from 100 to 120 dollars, second deputy from 90 to 100, clerk first deputy from 90 to 100, second deputy from 80 to 90, and janitor from 65 to 75. N. L. High School Students Move On After Semester End

The school plans a second semester start with new classes in commercial law arithmetic and American history. Relief Work Drives Child Welfare Fundraiser in Salem

Marion County Children's Bureau in Salem advances child welfare with a benefit at the Grand Opera House on February 20. Sefrien ding horses winter job and Prof Dyment of the university oversee publicity plans. A commercial club committee led by Ira C. Powell will raise funds in Monmouth to support the campaign. Monmouth previously raised $6,000 for the Normal fund and plans to expand this drive for the school.

Oregon City Man Wins Water System Contract

At an adjourned ecouncil session Charles T. Parker was awarded the gravity water system contract for 15 625 40. Dennis Construction Co. of McMinnville bid 18 897 14, with both bids near the engineer’s estimate. The project may finish under the 60 000 appropriation, pending start to finish steps.

Students urged to study politics and vote

Harvey K. Starkweather of Portland and Milwaukie told Normal School students at chapel last Friday that men and women should take an interest in politics as the active expression of government. He urged voting and teachers to combat indifference. Laurel Canning of Monmouth helped the Alpha Phi debating team in a February 3 debate at the University of Oregon during a women’s residence hall tournament.
