The chapel program honored athletes with class numerals and school letters for Senior and Junior teams, plus cups presented by President Ackerman. Mr. Gentle returned to greet students, and Miss Taylor praised athletic work as Miss Greene urged appreciation of beauty in daily life.
J Winegar recalls early Oregon days in Yamhill county when money for living was scarce. A trio contract to harvest ten acres of potatoes yielded only a dollar fifty each after spring sale at ten cents a sack due to a harsh winter. Miss Bessie Barnicott, recent Normal grad, plans to return to Portland. Monmouth high beat Buena Vista in a tight basketball game. Mrs Orville Butler is critically ill with pneumonia.
An article urges observing Thrift Day on a Saturday to promote saving over spending. It advocates starting a savings account, tightening budgets, and reducing waste, urging individuals to perform at least one thrifty act. It notes C P Cornwell and wife’s travels and Hazel Lorence’s move to Bend after a Portland visit.
Miss Catharine Gentle is home for two weeks while Woodland Washington schools are closed due to illness.
The Monmouth Civic Club met Friday in the high school library with ten members present. They discussed improvement plans and urged women in the district to join, promising a strong year of activity and a next meeting on February 9 at 2:30 PM.
Ira Powell G T Boothby and A Parker attended the joint legislative committee on the road question in Monmouth last Tuesday. The gathering drew a large crowd from across the state with a special Portland train, but no concrete progress for a west side highway was evident amid a session full of talk.
Miss Mamie Radabaugh hosted a chaffing dish party with Miss West as patroness for a congenial group. Guests drew envelopes for dinner partners and a job offer via a rebus, then enjoyed music, stories, and Miss West recounting a Bear steamer wreck tale near Eureka California.
Polk County Pomona Grange met in Monmouth for an all day session with all county granges represented. Five new members joined during an evening session. State Lecturer Minnie Bond installed officers for the year. A resolution praised State Dairy and Food Commissioner Mickle and urged non interference by the legislature. Next Pomona meeting will be at Oak Grove on the last Saturday in March.
The Parent-Teachers meeting is postponed due to a high school operetta show. If no further notice, the meeting will be held on the night of February 20. L. V. Macken plans to retire from hotel work and shift to the picture business after a successful Airlie show last Friday. Mr. McKinney, previously residing in the Murdock house, will assume hotel management.
John Nelson House, longtime clerk at the Beaver Hotel in Independence, died January 18. He was born in Nebraska in 1854 and left a son in Seattle a daughter in Ocean View Oregon and a daughter in Oakdale California.
