Normal School Notes Christmas Program and Gifts

The training department pupils staged a chapel program with a processional, gospel story by Grace Parkes, and stereopticon views. A Christmas tree and gifts followed a surprise in the gym, with Santa distributing prizes and children leaving happily. A large indoor lemon gift from a Corvallis visitor drew comment, and a Michigan natives reunion at P H Johnson’s featured dinner, tree, program, and dancing.

City Council Advances Budget and Bids on City Hall Move

City council meeting reports a $40.50 year end fines and licenses revenue, plans an eight mill tax to reduce debt, and awards the city hall move contract to C H Parker for 19.50 while W B Eggleston bids 20. A light at Broad and Clay is tabled until December 29. Basketball highlights include Company H N G O over Philomath College 12 to 4 and Dallas defeating Silverton 22 to 17.

O A Student Drowned in Corvallis River Incident

Ben H. Williams a freshman in civil engineering at O A C drowned in Mary's River near Corvallis while paddling with two classmates Bert Cole and Carson Bent. The three youths in canoes faced a strong current and heavy wind near the dam and Williams failed to reach the bank after being swept over the two foot deep water. Cole escaped after clinging to dam bushes and a cleat while Williams disappeared beneath the surface.

Rescue attempts fail as Williams swept away in river

A man identified as Williams, from Pasadena, California, was swept from shore during a water rescue when timbers or rocks washed into the water. Bent and companions jumped in to help but could not reach him in time. Williams' body was recovered later today.

Butler Family Thirty-Second Annual Reunion at Christmas Eve

The Butler family held its thirty-second annual reunion at J. B. W. Butler's home on Christmas Eve with about seventy attendees. Some members sent regrets but expressed intent to attend next year. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Mahr of Corvallis visited relatives locally. Ray Chute visited Jefferson for the holiday, while Dwight Quisenberry covered his duties at the Monmouth Creamery during the absence.

Death of Mike Cassidy in fall from bridge investigated

Independence laborer Mike Cassidy aged about 55 was found near the steel bridge to Salem, after a Christmas celebration. Authorities say death resulted from an accidental fall from about twenty feet, with the body mud-covered delaying identification. He leaves a wife and ten children.

Oregon forest reserve fund share to common school fund

Oregon's share from the National forest reserve fund for this year totals 365612.30 dollars, per a Treasury Department letter received by Governor West. The amount will be added to the common school fund.

Central Oregon Seen as Wheat Growers Future

President Carl R Gray of Hill lines touts Central Oregon as the Pacific Northwest granary. Five inland counties have vast area with limited population, signaling future wheat exports. Oregon Short Line expansion and an Oregon retail dealers meeting in Portland are noted along with a Dallas Angora Goat show and potential deep sea fishing ventures. A 2100 pound steer at Portland stockyards yields a 72.14 percent dressing, higher than Chicago’s 66.2 percent.
