The notice urges every man who turned 21 since June 6 to register on Saturday August 24. Excludes those in military service. Registration runs 7 am to 9 pm at local draft boards. Mail registrations must arrive by August 24. Penalty for nonregistration is imprisonment up to one year and induction. Sugar frosting ban noted as wartime conservation measure.
Charles Strong son of Mr and Mrs E W Strong and Martha Allen of Forest Grove married last Sunday at 3 pm at the bride’s parents home. Both graduates of the Normal. The bride’s father S M Allen is a hardware and automobile dealer of Forest Grove. Strong, who has attended C A C, works in Kline’s store Corvallis. He hopes to enlist in the marine band if possible. Mrs E W Strong of Monmouth attended the wedding.
Asa E. Young 1866 08 27 born Linn County Iowa died near Oregon City last Sunday after wandering from Monmouth where he had lived since January 1. He had been ill since moving to Oregon and was sent to the state hospital for treatment in June. Funeral at the Christian church next Sunday at 2 pm. He married Ada Panter in 1893 and left five children Harvey Effie Leslie Alice Glenn. He came to Oregon January 18 1918.
Monmouth District of Polk County Council of National Defense convenes this afternoon at 2:80 at ICCF Hall. Mrs Braden will outline the work and answer questions, inviting enrollments for Army Nurses Corps or Nurses Reserve training. Mrs Ostien reports her husband reached France. a letter from him is expected soon. Robert Strong is now employed in a war plant in Colorado.
Plans near completion for a statewide Salvation Army War Service drive in Oregon to raise 25000 dollars. The campaign runs September 15 through September 21 with Evangelist John M Linden as campaign manager and three district assistants supervising western central and eastern Oregon from Pendleton and Salem. The Portland office hosts Dr William Wallace Youngson as general and William M Ladd as treasurer.
Crowley resident Cass Riggs told the Itemizer in Dallas that oil and gas prospects are back in his locality and a test well may be sunk. Oklahoma oilmen are evaluating the site, with lease options already taken on thousands of surrounding acres. Gas pockets and suspected oil beneath Polk and Yamhill counties have long been noted, and Riggs has used gas from a water well on his farm for domestic lighting and heating.
A substantial tractor and implement show will cover 250 acres in Portland Oregon on September 5 6 and 7. Attendees can view a wide range of tractors including wheel drive creeper drive and different sizes for orchard vineyard and grain farms. The exhibit features mold board and disc plows harrows scrapers land levelers sub soilers and other implements offering an instructive display.

He recalls the near death encounter as a bullet grazed an ear and the line I saw Joe Clark's grave Poor Joe died fighting. The United States Treasury extends credits to France Belgium and Serbia totaling 6.492 billion dollars for allied war support.
Mr. Lewis on a Guthrie dairy farm south of Dallas lost a stack of straw and some grain in a fire Friday. Henry Ferns outfit was threshing when fire came from the blower mouth and set the straw alight. A dropped box of matches into the machine likely started the blaze. The separator was moved but the straw could not be saved. Some grain in nearby sacks was damaged by burning tops. Loss placed at $500.
In Buell Gooseneck, Mrs Walter Olmsted on a bicycle encountered a deer family in the road. The buck led the group with stomping feet, whistling, and horns lowered, challenging the travel before the doe and fawn moved on. The buck guarded their retreat and disappeared into the brush.
A. B. Morlan learned from son Howard that he was moved from Portland to Fort Leavenworth Kansas. Carl Bowman accompanies him. both are assigned to signal corps duties. John C. Uglow, formerly a Republican county clerk candidate, has purchased the Dr My and Mrs Mack and the Eur pheum picture show in Dallas. Independence anchors back from a coast trip.
The Grange discussed Monmouth's county fair exhibit with two premium prizes of thirty and twenty dollars. A committee of Edwards Riddell Calbreath Stockholm Powell Bursell and Maggie Butler will canvass residents and collect exhibits using a transport truck. A Grange picnic is set for August 25 likely at Rickreall, with arrangements and program planned.
I M Gilbert state board approves night shirts for all boys at the Boy's State Training School to prevent escapes as they will disrobe in the basement and lock up clothes before bed. Screens may be added to windows to aid security. The school is crowded and commitments should be kept to minimum.
