The county approved a budget with a tax rate of 79 cents per $100 valuation, down from 85 cents, marking the fourth tax cut in five years. Gulf Oil and Exxon representatives praised the budget. Commissioners also sought bids for a surplus generator, named Dr Juan Perez county health officer, approved a paid Grandfalls librarian, and covered $3,481 in DA expenses from narcotics investigations.
Ward County Grand Jury meets at 11 this morning to review cases from last week's drug arrests. Teresa Juarez and family were arrested in Barstow in an early raid for heroin and other drugs. Authorities expect additional arrests and sealed indictments. the related Reeves County Grand Jury met yesterday in conjunction with the raid.
The Odessa Social Security office says checks due on October 3 will be delivered Friday October 1 because the third falls on a Sunday. The policy applies to direct deposits and aims to avoid weekend cash delays. SSI checks remain unaffected.
Friday is the final day to register for the upcoming presidential election on November 2. Ward County has 5,897 registered voters after 350 new registrations. new blue cards should arrive by mid October. Voters may cast ballots without the card but affidavits will slow the process.
