A postscript to the Teacher Appreciation Banquet lauds Speaker Ben Barnes for backing the West Texas Children's Home project and praised his principled approach. The writer urges Texas parents to teach children how and where to ride bicycles and motor scooters, noting a scooter fatality and the need for proper training and licensing.
The 120 piece MHS marching band will feature two drum majors at Friday’s Crane game with Geary Garrison as one and Pat Johnston leading formations. New white capes with a large green M hang from the shoulders, and smart outfits for the drum majors arrive for the performance.
Final plans for Winkler County Fly-In Derby set for September 19 at 7 a.m. at Winkler County airport. Awards for goofiest landing youngest oldest pilot farthest distance and first female to land. 9 a.m. events include bomb dropping and spot landing under FAA rules. Breakfast costs adults 1 and children 50 cents.

The Classroom Teachers Association opens the new school year with a 7 PM meeting at Tatum School chaired by president Bill Shoemake. Guest speaker will be Gerhard Schuler, a German exchange student. All teachers urged to attend.
Bethany Baptist church in Monahans announces an Ira Watts Memorial Youth Center project. The plan renovates a house donated by Mr and Mrs Jack Corbell to honor Ira Watts a member of the churchs Young People Department. The center will host weekly youth activities with choruses devotions and prayer. A portrait and bronze plaque will be installed beside the main auditorium. Dr James A Turman president of the Texas Youth Council said a contract for use of the site and purchase of improvements at the old Pyote air base was signed September 1 by the Youth Council and UT Board of Regents. Papers have been forwarded to federal authorities to release the properties under federal control and remodeling should begin in about 30 days for the West Texas Children's Home use.
A damage suit from Loving County, Na omi York versus Phillips Pet. Co., leads today at 9 30 in a week long term. About 20 civil cases are ready for trial. Second is David Haynes versus KWS Trucking Inc for damages. Third is Emma Lou Coley versus Wm I Card III. A suit titled G T Hall versus Jimmy L Powell was postponed to a future term.
The State Parks and Wildlife Commission changes policy naming Park Managers as Park Superintendents. J A Jaynes at Sandhills Park has managed the concession stand and under the new plan concessions will be leased out. The Superintendent or family will not handle or be connected with concessions, with applications now open.
All parents and boys ages 9 to 11 are asked to attend a Cub Scout organizational meeting at Tatum School on Tuesday night at 7 30 to form dens and plan activities.
Regular Mona hang City Council meeting at 2 includes review of water and sewer plans a discussion of Standard Oil Company annexation request and possible approval of a supplementary tax roll by councilmen.
Ben Barnes spoke to 700 teachers and residents in Monahans praising the 59th Legislature for education funding and laws. Ross Rucker hosted the Teachers Appreciation Day event with awards to longtime staff, PTA leaders, and district employees. Speakers highlighted Pyote Children's Home work and local education initiatives as part of an evening emphasizing support for Texas schools.
Fans in the last week brought pick the winner slips to the News office. Beginning now no grid picks will be accepted at the News office. Slips must be turned in at participating merchants by 4 p.m. Thursday.
