World influence in Texas Centennial Exposition shifts to Harry Olmsted a longtime Southwest business and civic figure who takes the helm of the $25,000,000 fair following the death of William A Webb the previous general manager Olmsted served twenty years as a director of the State Fair of Texas.
Grandfalls Barstow schools set September 7 as first day of the 1936 37 term. Superintendents John S. White and G B Beane state that preparations are complete and faculty members are arriving in Grandfalls and Barstow for the opening.
Grandfalls Royalty Public School enrollment will begin later than planned as the new Grandfalls School building remains unavailable. Officials say the start is postponed and page three likely continues the update with details on rescheduled dates and temporary arrangements.
L R Titus, resident engineer, says caliche base between Pyote and Wickett on the Bankhead highway should be finished by week’s end. Two miles east from Pyote are ready for asphalt, but the full 16 mile base must be done first. Contractors Cook and Braden push work with 135 men. Caliche output runs 1800 to 2000 yards daily from a pit south of the highway near Wickett. Detours are minimal as the new road runs parallel to the old route.
Fifteen houses started this week signal continued growth in Monahans. Real estate men estimate the new construction includes five rental houses in the Fred Gibson addition north of the school. Builders include B W Wood, Boyd Brazel, Otis Ramsey, W Weddle, Roy Murray, John McCullough, W A Agee, and W R Dennis. Oil firms are erecting homes for employees with attached tool sheds. Lots sold for small businesses and residences range from 50 to 300 dollars, with many lots twenty five feet wide, risking crowding conditions.
Mr and Mrs C E Motley return to their Wickett home after a two week vacation in Fort Worth and Dallas detailing their travels and hospitality.
A rainfall helped protect Grayson Variety Store in Monahans as H F Grayson closed the transoms and two burglars were caught inside with six dollars, clothing, and cigarettes. Ed Kasparek and Bill Wheatley, driving a Kansas car, were jailed awaiting district court with bonds set at two thousand dollars each. Kasparek is on parole for burglary. Wheatley is wanted in Kansas on another charge.
Brick work has begun this week on two modern brick buildings by Prince Brothers, drilling contractors formerly of Electra. Located between Bodenhoff's Department Store and the S. & S. Grocery, the 30 by 60 foot structures will house Bodenhoff's and Grayson's Variety Store. They aim for occupancy by October 15, with possible completion by October first. The buildings will be nearly fireproof with steel ceilings, plastered walls, hardwood floors, three skylights each, and modern show-front fronts. A crew of twenty is at work full time to speed completion.
Miss Dorothy L. Connally R N formerly night supervisor at All Saints Episcopal Hospital Fort Worth assumed duties as superintendent of Northside Hospital on September 1 She resigned her Fort Worth post recently to accept the new role here.
The Monahans High School football team begins the 1936 season with two home games before traveling for the first conference clash against Crane on October 3. Alpine visits September 26 as part of a broader Interscholastic League shift with Rankin and other towns. Rankin, now in district seven, Class B, joins Fort Stockton. Alpine, Iraan, McCamey, Big Lake, and Sanderson also move into legitimate competition. Johnny Prude, ex-Sul Ross star, coaches Rankin.
In west Monahans V H Guy becomes sole owner of the Guy and Landers Addition an eight acre tract plotted into town lots for home sites located west of the new school building Guy plans to continue selling sites from the property and holds choice locations from the deal The partnership Landers and Guy began has dissolved with Guy as sole owner per county records
Skelly Oil Company plans to move its district office to Monahans with construction of an office building and three company houses. Site likely on Wink highway pending land title, with A A Hunt arriving as superintendent and George Young as district clerk. Acme Lumber Co. to build the office and camp, aiming for completion by October first.
Light rains fell Wednesday night and again Thursday across Monahans and nearby communities totaling about a quarter inch. Overcast skies and cooler temperatures revived late feed crops, gardens, grass, and flowers, bringing a pleasant atmosphere to the region.
Jim Williams, partner in the W and W Grocery, returned from El Paso with a new refrigerator and meat display counter to be installed next week. The unit is heavy glass and will keep the meat near freezing in the display compartment.
H P Davis former Pecos Chamber secretary arrives in Monahans at local businessmen request to organize and manage a new Chamber. Davis long active in the region previously led major Pecos projects including Red Bluff Dam and a water bond election with no dissent.
Monahans and Pyote public schools prepare to open on September 14 as Monahans rushes completion of the new high school for the start of the term. Superintendent P D Lewis of Pyote arrives to plan the weekly school program.
Monahans Public Schools prepare for the 1936 37 year with a new high school building near completion and a predicted 1000 students. Superintendent A E Lang notes 953 enrolled last month and 25 teachers, with nine new hires and two resignations. New courses include industry journalism home economics physics biology and public speaking.
