Season Ticket Renewals Urged For Estes Stadium

The school system business office reminds season ticket holders to renew for the five Estes Stadium home games. After 5 p.m. September 3 un Reserved seats become available to the public at 7.50 dollars per seat. Last year’s holders have priority.

Federal Court refuses to halt school merger

Federal Judge D W Suttle denied Pyote School Board's bid for a stay prohibiting the consolidation of Monahans Wickett and Pyote districts. The merger was carried out August 3 after state court orders. Pyote had sought federal review claiming lack of representation on the County School Board. The court found no federal appellate jurisdiction and noted the districts were already consolidated.

Barstow Seeks Part Of Pyote District After Merger

Barstow Sup J C W Wright asked the County School Board on August 26 to detach portions of the old Pyote district for Barstow. He proposed plans to transfer 38 51 or 53 sections to Barstow to equalize value per student among Barstow Mona hans Wickett Pyote and Grandfalls Royalty districts. The board will study the request for a future session and consider funding from Grandfalls Royalty.

School Plan Gains Federal Acceptance in Monahans

Washington officials have given final approval to Monahans School System’s desegregation plan. The plan allows freedom of choice for first six grades with students from Clements Pope and Brockman zones to attend either school regardless of race. Earlier tentative approval followed a Midland meeting with a federal official in August.

Library Curtailed Hours During Librarian on Vacation

The county library operates with shortened hours this week as Miss Selma Rae Henry is away. Regular evenings remain open while today hours are 4 to 8 p m and Friday 2 to 6 p m. The library closes Saturday and resumes normal hours after Labor Day.

Voters decide next Tuesday September 7 whether to increase the Texas Senate from 31 to 39 members. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at multiple precincts. the vote is a constitutional amendment with urban areas likely to gain influence and proponents argue for more flexible apportionment and workload distribution.

Barstow school system begins classes Tuesday, following Labor Day, as the last Ward County district to start the new term. Superintendent C. W. Wright expects about 250 students. Monahans-Wickett-Pyote schools started this week with a record student body. Superintendent George Callender announced pre-enrollment at 3100 students, potentially rising to about 3300. Classes resume Tuesday morning after a Monday faculty meeting, with new students still increasing counts. School begins Tuesday Sept 7 at 8 45 a.m.

Snelson to discuss proposal tonight

Fire and Smoke Close Downtown Shops After Electrical Mishap

A fire at Main and Sealy disrupted downtown activity Monday afternoon. One man suffered hand burns and a woman was slightly overcome by smoke as flames and smoke spread from a damaged two story building that once housed Monahans Drug. An electric line and a television antenna caused the blaze. Bob Behne was burned while removing the antenna but escaped a fatal shock due to partial grounding. Mildred's dress shop also closed as smoke and water entered the building.

Trail Riders Headin West on Labor Day Parade

The Headin West Trail Association launches its annual Labor Day Ride Saturday at 4 p.m. with a downtown parade then proceeds westward. Ray Briggs of Odessa is Trail Boss and Bill Rhodes, assistant trail boss, announces plans to entertain at Pyote and next year at the Children’s Home. Dues are $3 annually. riders may join via Briggs or Rhodes. The group travels from Pyote to Kermit Sunday to join Winkler County festivities.
