The Between Seasons Employment program opens WPA based work for farmers and ranch hands in Monahans and Ward County. Eligible individuals must have net profit under 312 dollars for the year and be Texas residents for at least a year.
The Associated Press reports a special cotton loan schedule for irrigated cotton in West Texas New Mexico Arizona and California about five dollars per bale lower than other regions. E H Simons El Paso Chamber secretary urged protests to U S Senators Morris Sheppard and Tom Connally and local growers groups calling the policy discriminatory and harmful to Red Bluff Monahans and Ward County farmers.
The Monahans and Wickett school system schedules a Tuesday morning opening at 6 o clock for about 1400 students with 40 teachers led by new superintendent P D Lewis. New principals W S Ely and A Bradley join the staff along with many returning teachers as the district gathers for registration and opening announcements.
Ross Williams now operates Williams Electric two doors north of Oil Well Supply Company in Monahans. He brings sixteen years of electrical wiring and refrigeration experience and has run a Monahans business for two and a half years.

Three Barnsdall Refinery workers died trapped in a fire after a butane tank exploded at a refinery near Odessa on Tuesday morning. Twelve others initially reported trapped escaped. Victims named are R. H. Brooks 35 Glen Carlton 20 and G. T. Scott 20. Estimated damage later cited between 30 000 and 50 000 by president E B Reeser.
Several Monahans Golf Club members will enter the Trans-Pecos Golf Tournament at Fort Stockton on Saturday and Sunday. E. H. Savage and Jimmie Strong won first and second flights at the Iraan Invitational last Sunday. W. G. Hayter and Grady Kidd, former tourney prize recipients, lost in first round at Iraan.
Local businessmen gathered at the American Legion building to help scoutmasters craft yearly plans for the Boy Scouts in Monahans. With 40 scouts and 40 cubs, an intensive campaign aims to strengthen the local scout organization.

Ross, a pioneer Monahans family member who watched the town grow from a cross‑roads hamlet to a thriving city, attended Grandfalls grammar school and San Antonio’s Main Avenue High School. He won a state declamation contest as a teen, studied journalism at the University of Texas, and returned to Monahans to lead civic groups and work in local businesses. He married Dorothy Kuper of Caney, Kansas on Christmas Day last year. His proudest achievement was ranking highest in English on the UT entrance exam among about 2000 freshmen, and he now pursues golf with ambition to outplay a certain newspaperman.
Durward Cline and his NBC orchestra will perform at Tubb's Hall Saturday night for the Labor Day celebration. Ray Keen, manager, says the band is famous across the midwest after recent Texas engagements. Admission is $1.65 per couple with table reservations at Monahans Drug Store.
Rev. W. R. Mann from Midland will conduct services at the Presbyterian Church this Sunday at 11 o'clock. A congregational meeting is planned and all members are asked to attend.
Monahans residents plan trips to the Midland Rodeo and Fair September 3 to 5. Hon. W Lee O'Daniel governor elect and a party of twelve including the Hill Billy band will attend on Monday September 5. Monahans representatives Mrs H A Clements and Charles Holley will join Cowgirl contest and Oil Men's Roping event officials.
Clarence Scharbauer announces Midland Fair Inc will host the 1938 Midland Rodeo, with O'Daniel accepting the Midland invitation via John N. Sparks. The event expects 30 000 attendees and over $5 000 in purses. The opening parade starts tomorrow at 1 pm with arena performances at 2 pm and 8 pm on Sunday and Monday. Calf roping team tying bronc riding bulldogging and wild events are listed in the schedule.
Grandfalls hosted junior NRA members on Tuesday with medals awarded for top records in prone sitting kneeling and standing firing positions. Instructor Darold Wilson announced the event and medal details.

Thirty-three wells finished and six tests abandoned dry across 71 counties, with 33 producers overall and a decline in locations versus the prior week. Ector led in completed producers with 13, Ward five, Aston four, Winkler three, others two or one.
Kenneth Clark, county auditor, has returned after a two week vacation spent in northeast Texas and southern Oklahoma.
Mrs. Tom Bradford and her son Houston visit her daughter Mrs. J. C. Love and Miss Tommy Bradford in Lamesa. The gathering centers on family time with the Bradford relatives.
Ward county voters cast 2935 ballots in the Democratic run-off, about 15 percent below July turnout. J B Jordan won the Justice of the Peace race in Precinct 2, F Irby Dyer was re-elected sheriff, Mrs. Ira Morris retained the clerk’s lead, and G O Walker defeated S R Carr for county chair. Clyde Bradford beat James Goodman in the 88th District run-off, while Coke Stevenson Gerald C Mann and Jerry Sadler carried three state races.
R E Turrentine and Paul V Reed announce a new Between Seasons Employment program in Ward County. The unit will coordinate with WPA projects and certify eligible farmers ranchers tenants and hands whose net income for the year does not exceed 312. County Judge Fred P Snelson estimates at least 200 men may qualify for work during January February July and August or major parts of these months.
