Many offices closed Thursday. few stores open for forgotten holiday supplies. Reporters, advertisers, and carriers reminded of early date.

Police seek a 29 year old man accused of raping a 22 year old woman after offering a ride home. The suspect allegedly detained her short of the city limits and assaulted her. Police Chief Mills said a warrant exists though no location is known.
Winners were named for the 1979 Pecan Perfection Exhibition. M. O. Lisman earned grand champion pecans, with George Gannaway as reserve and John Tatum as runner-up. Nell Berry led food division with grand champion and most entries, Donna Watts claimed both grand and reserve crafts, and complete results will appear Sunday.
