Former county judge tied to Monahans civic projects
Carl Estes born 1905 in Grandfalls began public service in the 1930s helping form a volunteer fire department after a fire. He later became Ward County deputy sheriff, cattle inspector, and Ranger commissioned. Estes served as county judge in Monahans, helped establish Sandhills State Park, and remained active in community efforts to provide youth with outdoor space.

Ward County Commissioners to clear long agenda Tuesday
Ward County Commissioners meet at 9 30 Tuesday to clear items from weeks of work. They will act on an animal control resolution final minutes of the board of equalization funds for the Monahans Chamber of Commerce bids for six 3 000 gal fuel tanks hospital equipment and county annex and canvass election returns. Two budget amendments include revenue sharing for industrial development and intra fund transfers.

1979 Pecan Exhibition set for November 20
The 1979 Permian Basin Pecan Perfection Exhibition will be held November 20 at the First National Bank of Monahans. Grand champions in pecan, food, and craft divisions win cash prizes and plaques, with additional awards for reserve champions, runners-up, and most entries. SUG officials to explain rate increase to city
The Monahans City Council will discuss a 24 percent rate increase sought by Southern Union Gas. They will study a 13 page request and hold a public hearing so residents hear how gas rates are set. The agenda also includes traffic code updates and two proposals to remove lots from the fire zone for trailer homes.
