Monahans Lions Club members and wives enjoyed a steak fry on the Pecos River following an attendance contest. Four new members Howard Finley James Tripp Rex Smith and J W Casey were welcomed after passing tests. Attendees included Lions and Lionesses plus guests Miss Mary Finley Lois Lang and Mrs Johnson.
The First Methodist Church will campaign to raise funds to build a parsonage for Rev. T W Guthrie. The home is to be built in the Southlang addition with F R Wildman donating a deed to an adjoining lot. Officials expect to raise funds soon and commend the congregation for supporting their pastor’s housing needs.
Caudle of Ballenger leased space from Econo Drug Store and plans a first class jewelry shop with repair department next week. The Caudles have moved to Monahans and await finished fixtures. Caudle brings years in the jewelry business and promises complete jewelry lines and quality repairs.
A correction explains Sherwood's Grocery and Market was left out of the Monahans High School graduating class congratulations page. The firm runs an individual congratulatory message in this issue and asks the class to read it as a local business showing support.
Heavy rains drenched this section Sunday with Royalty and Grandfalls near flood stages. A Royalty telephone pole burned after being struck by lightning as storms brought wind and rain. Monahans area later faced hail and damaged gardens and windows, while ranchers seek prolonged wet weather to relieve drought.
Rev. Leon Frazier announces Anniversary Sunday on June 2 at the First Baptist Church. E. R. Hill will report a history of the church including finances and membership gains. Rev. Frazier will preach an 11 oclock anniversary sermon and leaders plan a larger program for the coming year. A. W. Willard and family visited from Ft. Stockton.
Lester Collison, manager, announces matinee shows start June 1 at 2 30 p m daily at the Texas Theatre Monahans to serve out of town shoppers and ensure quality entertainment. The first twenty ladies entering the box office for the matinee from June 3 to June 6 will receive free admittance. An Articaire cooling system keeps the theatre cool on hot afternoons.
The Women's Missionary Society gathered Wednesday at 2:30 PM in the Methodist church with a large attendance. Mrs. J. W. Casey provided refreshments for members including Mesdames Fuller Morvan Belamy Conley Bearden Herrison Sloan Woods Guthrie Guy Parish Casey and visitor Mrs. Guthrie. The group will continue meeting weekly at the church at 2:30 PM and next week is study week with all members urged to attend.
H Johnson former manager of the Grand Theatre Pecos was in Monahans Tuesday afternoon transacting business. He is currently selling a popular make of automobile to local customers.
Mrs. A. B. Barker arrived from Fort Worth Tuesday night to join her husband and son at the Economy Drug store.
The city plans a sanitary sewer system funded via a Dallas Federal Reserve branch loan. E L Dalton of Dallas is contracted to start by June 10 1935 with a 75 day completion target. An NRS office opens at City Hall for local registrations led by Miss Ilda Vernon.
At Musquiz canyon near Fort Davis the famed rock known as the Devil's washboard is being blasted to build a state highway. The work removes a half century old road built by the Tenth Cavalry, a U S negro regiment. The 1879 road and its builders are described, with note of General H B Grierson, later Fort Davis pioneer. A saber at Fort Davis State Bank records Grierson and Tenth Cavalry history.
Rev. Leon Frazier traveled to Alpine on the 18th to officiate a double wedding for Pauline Bierschwabe and Travis Roberts and Virginia Smith and O. W. Roberts. The couples plan to live at the Gage Ranch near Marathon Texas after the ceremony. The newlyweds left for Del Rio and other Texas destinations.
Mr and Mrs F P Gipson and family leave Monahans for Houston where Billy graduates from Rice Institute this year. The T and P railroad agent takes a vacation after a year of seven day work. The party plans to visit several coast cities before returning home.
The Pecos Valley Association Workers Conference will meet at Balmorhea next Tuesday. T. Y. Casey presides in the morning session on Laymen as God's Stewards while Judge Blaydes leads the afternoon on Laymen and the Methods of Stewardship. Rev. E. E. Dawson urges strong layman attendance. Rev. Leon Frazier hopes many Baptist men join.
Oliver J. Jenkins will take charge of Mickey's Cafe tomorrow and run the business during the Bland couple's extended vacation. Jenkins has two years' experience as chef at Jimmy's Cafe and is regarded as capable in cooking a wide range of dishes.
Band director Chas G Walker announces band practice next Thursday at 7 30 PM in the high school building. The notice urges all members to attend and bring their instruments.
A bond election on June 15 seeks 75008 dollars to build and equip a new school building for Consolidated Common School District No 2. Theo Andrews to act as presiding officer with two judges and two clerks. Polls open at Monahans Free School Building per general election hours. District enrollment has grown, prompting the need for a new facility and a full voter turnout is expected.
The Rev. T W Guthrie and wife relocated from Pyote to Monahans last week. He will oversee both Monahans and Pyote churches from Monahans. Sunday services will start at 8 15 PM in Monahans next Sunday June 2 and Pyote morning services will be added to allow the pastor to serve both churches. The News welcomes Rev and Mrs Guthrie and pledges courtesy to their congregation.
Andrews reports Miss Sis Harp visited the town on Tuesday as part of a local social round.
Dave C Sudderth owner of Corner Drug Store in Ward County unveils a Sam Speed ice cream manufacturing machine with five gallon per ten minute capacity and storage for sixty gallons. The store will stock six to eight flavors and offer free ice cream to customers on Saturday.
The Rev. Woodie W. Smith of Fort Worth known for preaching and singing will hold revival services at Grandfalls Baptist Church from June 2 to 16, mornings and evenings. He previously preached successfully in Manahans, and Pastor A. W. Smith invites all to attend the 10:00 AM and 8:30 PM sessions.
Mr. Lewis Bradfield left Friday to Austin to bring his brother Paul home from the university. Paul will resume his duties with the highway department.
