Ward County hosts the fifth annual All-Junior AJRA Rodeo opening next week at 8 p.m. in the county arena on the Fort Stockton Highway. Hundreds of entrants from four states expected with parades, barbecue, and nightly acts by Clint Harlow and others.
A Sunday night shower added .3 inches to Ward County rainfall for a yearly total of 8.14 inches, signaling potential to surpass the 12.04 inch average quoted by the Texas Almanac. Vergil Herrington notes soil and range conditions are in wonderful shape, with cotton being cultivated and hay cutting beginning in the Barstow area.
Signal Oil will drill a test well into the Clear Fork within city limits while earlier approved condemning 13 abandoned homes and clearing 60 day removal deadlines. The council also approved a three year street-improvement plan, seal coating on 118 blocks, and water system upgrades including a new Hogg Ranch well and an overhead Rudy Park tank.
The commission voted to move their regular meeting from 1 0 o'clock to 9 a m to match daylight and allow more road supervision time. They directed the County Clerk to notify 17 property renditions deemed low to appear before the Equalization Board on June 23 to discuss the matter.
Memorial Day events include an 8 p.m. service at VFW Post 4004 by Cadette Girl Scout Troop 221 and graveside ceremonies at cemeteries Friday by World War I Veterans and the VFW. A 9:30 a.m. ceremony at the Cemetery features Rev. C C Gober and taps by a local high school band.
Insufficient local interest leads to a failed Tuesday night meeting to reform the local American Red Cross chapter. It marks the second unsuccessful attempt in recent weeks as Countians are directed to Midland for Red Cross aid after Ward County Chapter was disbanded last year.
