Record crowd attends Oil Gas Day barbecue in Ward County
A record 7,342 people filled Ward County Coliseum for Oil and Gas Appreciation Day. The event served 4,232 lbs of beef brisket, 400 lbs of beans, 1,000 lbs of cole slaw, and 50 kegs of beer, cooked mainly by oil and gas company workers led by Red Moore. The day also featured sports, games, and an art show, with results in tennis, windfall slo pitch softball, and washers. Texas Comptroller Bob Bullock reported county reimbursements for voter registration efforts, listing amounts by county. Ward County received 628 dollars.

Legislature revises appraisal district law in Texas
The Texas House tabled Rep Nabers HB602 but approved SB621 revisions by 111 to 36. Changes require elected district directors, remove the three fourths rule, allow voter tax rollbacks this year, streamline elderly exemptions, grant two thirds veto power to local governments, and ease taxpayer appeals. Nabers warned the bill would have centralized appraisals if passed.

All Sports Banquet at coliseum tonight
The Monahans High School All Sports Banquet at Ward County Coliseum honors the young men and women across all sports. Coaches award Most Improved and Most Outstanding Players, with special Todd Larned Memorial and News Outstanding Senior Woman Athlete prizes. Local speakers will address the athletes, continuing the school’s athletic year.
