Bodenhoffs Visit Monahans After Waco Trip

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bodenhoff and Mrs. Alma Horn arrive in Monahans from Waco. They came in response to the serious illness of Mr. Horn, who died last month. The Bodenhoffs plan to stay several days to handle business matters. he formerly ran a department store here before selling to Dunlap's last January.

Ward County Cotton Yield Up 51 Lbs By AAA for 1939

County agent John Mogford reports Ward county average lint yield per acre rose from 187 pounds in 1938 to 238 pounds in 1939 under the Agricultural Adjustment Administration. AAA payments to local farmers will exceed 1938 by about 13,489 dollars, with total 1939 payments near 100,000 dollars if farmer cooperation is complete.

Superintendent John S. White of Grandfalls Royalty school remains gravely ill after an appendectomy. He is still receiving blood transfusions and treatment for an internal infection in Lubbock where he is listed in serious condition.

Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Scroggins announce the birth of a six and one half pound daughter. The baby was born Wednesday morning May 3 in Abilene hospital from which Mrs. Scroggins was graduated as a nurse. Mr. Scroggins is associated with Wooten's Wholesale Grocery in town.

Residents of the north side seek a new elementary school building for grades up to five. A petition will be presented to the school trustees at the next board meeting. Advocates cite four daily crossings of railroad tracks and main street as a safety hazard for children.

District Court to Open Monday

Monahans residents hear State Senator Winfield will oppose the County Judges Bill. The measure would shift unpaid county road bonds onto the state and fund repayment from the gasoline tax. The Monahans Chamber of Commerce wired its opposition and seeks support from Winfield and Representative Goodman. no word yet from Goodman.

Monahans band entries at Abilene national contest earned two first division ratings and one second division. A clarinet trio of Jack Strickler Jimmy Collins and Arlan Tate placed first division and Tom Green won first division in the twirling drum major contest. Donald Yarbro earned second division as a flute soloist. The complete band was not entered.

May term opens with center on Ward County murder case

The May term of District Court opens Monday with heavy interest in the criminal docket. Ward county’s first murder case in years, involving Hugh White over the March 29 midnight slaying of S. Punk Weaver at Royalty, is slated for Grand Jury consideration. An appeal from City Court fines against W. B. Howell for reselling out-of-county cars without an established new car agency also adds local attention.

Big Bend Park Prospects Improve as House Passes Bill

The Texas House backed Senate bill 109 by a 109 to 20 vote sending it toward the Governor. If established, $225000 yearly would fund maintenance and 120000 visitors would spend about seven days in Texas, totaling at least $3500000 annually. The House removed an appropriation provision, so the bill returns to the Senate.
