The City Council meets at City Hall to study minimum charges for multi units and trailer parks and to decide on water and sewer extensions for Humble building. A tank site on East 10th Street is debated with park use option and heating cooling system for City Hall bids.
Neil Byrom, a local Southwestern Life agent, survived two traffic mishaps in as many days while praising insurance. Meanwhile Girl Scout Week draws praise for volunteers, and Texas Furniture Company of Monahans earns outstanding retailer honors at the West Texas Retail Furniture Dealers Association event in El Paso. John Wheeler won a miniature De Soto car at the same meeting, joked about using it as a golf cart, and displayed it at the Texas Furniture Store.
Police investigated three traffic incidents since the last report. At 12:13 a.m. Thursday, Charles Edward Lee and Ronald E. Killough collided on South Main at 4th Street causing 275 dollars in damage. At 7:55 p.m. Thursday, Neil Byrom and Clayburn M. Lee caused about 450 dollars damage after a two car collision on West Sealy at South Carroll. Friday at 10:30 a.m., a four car crash on East 2nd Street by the post office involved Billie Daline Mitchell’s car, Neil Byrom’s cars, Ken Welch’s, and Ray Hill’s pickup, with only a small amount of damage.
The Altar Society of Christ the King Church hosts a Mexican supper tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at the high school cafeteria. Tickets are 1 for adults and 50 cents for children.
Local utility lists show twenty new families settling Monahans in two weeks. Bill Stewart of Gulf Oil Corp was elected president of the Ward County Texas Exes Association at the annual meeting held Friday night at Cliff's Two. Officers include Joe McShane vice president Waylon Martin secretary Bruce Hughes reporter and Ed De Moss Gene Dow and Walt Roeber directors. Martin outgoing president led the program featuring a film of the Texas vs Rice game and a study of the News Digest annual UT alumni report.
Sheriff Blackie McNerlin went to Dallas Saturday to return Abbie Swafford to face a local charge of car theft. Swafford was taken into custody at Dallas several weeks back but was held to face charges there before being released to Ward County authorities.
Jim Lewis about 50 a Monahans Negro was in jail Friday on a charge of theft over 50 dollars. Lewis is accused of taking an automobile motor from the Triple E Service Station on North Main Wednesday night. He is held under a 1500 dollar bond.
Vernon Gene Robinson, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs W G Robinson, suffered a skull fracture after falling from a car driven by his mother, Mrs. Robinson, as she backed out of a drive away at 811 E. 4th. Police say the front tire may have hit his head. He was rushed to the hospital.
The chamber of commerce handles varied queries from a Wyoming man seeking jackrabbit meat for mink food to housing information, band engagements, circus flea training rumors, job leads, vacation tips, and even requests to expel someone. The office replies promptly as part of building a better city, though not every wish can be granted.
The Cham ber of Commerce announced the annual Home and Hobby Show will be held April 19 20 and 21 at the county coliseum. The Chamber has sponsored the event for three years and expects growing displays and interest with several national manufacturers planning standout exhibits. Local exhibitors can plan displays and merchandise orders in advance. Further information is available at the Chamber office.
A Civil Air Patrol squadron formation meeting is set for 7 30 p m Tuesday at the Community Building in Monahans. Organizers aim to collect membership forms and appoint officers, with charter from Texas CAP once 15 members sign up. Open to those interested in flying radio communications cadet instruction and flight observing.
About 175 people attended the Monahans Lions Club sixteenth anniversary and zone social at Tatum Cafeteria last Tuesday. Guests included international directors Joe E. Childers from Abilene and Aubrey D. Green from York Alabama as speakers. The cake cutting, life membership certificates to Hal and Mrs Adams, and a 10 year certificate to Lion Seals Brown highlighted the evening. Charter members listed with many attendees. Dianna Duhagan won the zone talent contest and will advance to the District Convention.
Strong winds tore off metal windbreaks and twisted around a trailer at a drilling rig about 10 miles north of Monahans Friday night. Deputy Sheriff Bill Pinkston said no one was present and there were no injuries.
Funeral services for Arthur Lee Turner Sr. of Grandfalls will be held at 3 pm at the Grandfalls Community Building. Turner, 68, died Saturday night at his Grandfalls home after years of ill health. Burial is in Monahans Cemetery. Barnes Funeral Home in charge. He is survived by his wife Thelma, four daughters Estep Vaughn Fort Worth, Thelma Doddy Kermit, Ella Phillips Fort Worth, Mary Estep Grandfalls, four sons Kenneth Monahans, Art Ralph Raymond Grandfalls, a brother Wade Turner Mangum Okla, three sisters Ella Ragsdale Midland, Maggie Copley Dallas, Mabel Littlejohn Salina Calif, and 13 grandchildren.
A health unit will set up chest X ray locations in Ward County this week with sites at Middleton Sudderth Monahans March 11 Clements Pope School Monahans March 12 Pyote Wickett and Barstow Schools March 13. Hours are 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 5 30 p.m. Adults are asked to come after 3 45 p.m. if possible.
Mrs. D. S. Nichols, Easter Seal fund chairman of Grand Falls, announces the drive continues through March. The Ward County unit, part of the Texas Society for Crippled Children, helps needy children with medical care. Last year four local youngsters received care. about 75 percent of local funds stay locally, 25 percent go to the national group. Treasurer Helen Walsh at First State Bank and Mrs. Nichols accept contributions.
