In West Texas the Chamber of Commerce urges realistic criteria for creating junior colleges. The piece argues adding two grades to every county high school offering would let students stay at home during a formative period, reducing costs compared with sending students away to college.
A midweek sand storm near Monahans produced a drop to around 25 degrees with locals debating its origin. Temperatures from John Rogers, Ward County Weather Observer show a 68 on Monday March 6 and 29 on Tuesday March 7 with 51 and 20 on Wednesday and Thursday. Year to date rainfall remains 0 inches.
A first organizational meeting in Monahans drew 16 men to discuss forming a men’s garden club. A nomination committee of Joe Lanier Claud Tipton and Toon Estes will report back on March 16. Charles Holt of Odessa showed entomology films and the group plans education on plant diseases and insect studies.
Mayor Jim S. Williams has been undergoing medical tests in Sun Tower El Paso for two weeks. The stay is described as noncritical with heaviest focus on diagnostic work and monitoring by city officials.
A single vehicle crash six miles north of Monahans on State 18 Monday night killed William Lawrence Sonny Johnson 30 and injured William Alford Pete Prater 30. Johnson died at the scene and Prater was hospitalized. Both were Halliburton employees returning from Kermit when the car, at high speed, skidded about 250 feet, knocked down guard rails, and ended in a west ditch. Johnson’s survivors include wife Dorothy and two children. Funeral services were set for 10 a.m. at Bell-Seale Chapel, Snyder. Pallbearers were Monahans coworkers. Johnson, born Jan 28 1937, was Korean War veteran and Church of Christ member. survived by three sisters and three brothers and his parents.
Dr. Juan Perez, currently practicing in Colorado City, will move to Monahans and open offices in association with Dr. C. S. Patterson, expanding local medical care.
Delbert Winston Jones sentenced to life for the November 1965 murder of Mrs. Reyes Garcia in Monahans. Attorneys Tom White and Holt Magee argue to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals that the sentence should have been decided by the jury. Further appeals possible up to the Texas Supreme Court. Jones faces transfer to Huntsville State Prison if all fail.
The Ward County Republican Party schedules its regular meeting Monday evening March 13 at 7 30 in the Thrift Room of the Texas Saving and Loan. No speaker is planned as several policy items will be acted on. Following recent redistricting, three new precinct chairmen will be named to serve in the updated voting precincts. County chairman J L Pinkerton urges all precinct chairmen to attend the county executive committee meeting immediately after the regular session.
Residents note a 144 day dry spell since October 15 1966 with no rain sleet or snow. Texas Almanac 1966 cites Ward County average annual rainfall 12.04 inches, 1956 record low 1.76 inches, and 1950-56 drought as unmatched in state history.
A Monahans youth Melvin Tuck son of Mr and Mrs C H Tuck was bitten twice by a rattlesnake Sunday afternoon at a picnic area. He sat still tied his shoe string above the bite and returned to the group where an adult treated the wound before he was rushed to McCamey Hospital. Doctors say his actions likely saved his life and he is now recuperating at home. The incident serves as a warning to children to beware of rattlesnakes as warm weather arrives.
A 2000 MPH secret jet during tests produced a sonic boom heard around 7:30 Tuesday morning. The craft, reportedly flying up to 80,000 feet, is in testing and may generate booms twice weekly during this period.
About 3,000 parents and townspeople joined Open House tours at Monahans Pyote Wickeet district schools Tuesday night. Public School Week runs through Friday with 159 teachers in the system, as Masonic Lodges sponsor the event.
A meeting set for 7 30 p m on April 6 to form a Monahans Community Co Ordinating Council. About 50 people attended the Monday session with Buddy Byars leading the drive and proposing a 3 per year participation fee from each organization to fund the council. A nominating committee was named to prepare for the organizational meeting next month. The aim is to coordinate efforts of some 83 organizations in Ward County and avoid duplicate or conflicting programs.
The 143rd District Court will hear next week the cases of The State of Texas vs William L. Thornton Jerry Logan Sylvia Spivey Robert Eugene Cutrell and Bradley.
