Ward county residents push a county seat move from Andrews to Monahans with 925 names collected. Officials aim for about 1200 signatures, needing over half of freeholders to trigger an election commission action. A July 12 commissioners court session will set final steps.
Mrs. A. E. Lang leads twenty Monahans Girl Scouts on a four day to Camp Tomkamwa at Buffalo Gap near Abilene. The group uses Camp Tenkama, lent by the Abilene Boy Scouts. Activities include merit badge work swimming and hiking with meals supervised by Lt. Lynn Hateher.
Pipkin Brothers Jess and Grady push fixtures and equipment to finish as they prepare to open a new grocery store likely in the latter part of next week across from the S and S Grocery. The brothers own six stores in Eastlands and Breckenridge vicinity and one in Odessa opened last weekend.
George W. Buckner of Dallas, official of Wickett Refining Company, has been in Wickett the past week in the interests of the company. Gulf employees are set to attend an exposition in Dallas on Saturday.
Two 24 foot billboards owned by the Palace Theatre were destroyed by a fire of undetermined origin on Tuesday in the town west end near the highway. A missing nearby hydrant likely hindered extinguishment. Another fire Friday involved a trash laden truck alight en route to aid and was put out before causing damage.
Work on the Gulf Service Station owned by L. M. Prater near City Pharmacy progresses this week with tile and stucco finishing. No opening date has been set as of late this week.
City figures released by City Secretary Ilda Vernon show rapid growth in Monahans water connections. In July 1933 there were 84 meters. by February 1936 the number was 231. A year ago 272 meters, now 450. May tied 28 meters, a record for a month, with similar levels reached before. Installation has risen each month.
W T Powell of Monahans was elected vice-president of the graduate students at Sul Ross State Teachers College on Wednesday June 16. Both Powells are Sul Ross graduates active in college dramatics. they belong to Alpha Psi Omega and Mrs Powell is a Delta Kappa Gamma. They played leads in "Smilin Through" in a popular college production later toured.
C. H. Madres No. 1 Pat Wilson, a Ward County wildcat six miles west of Pyote, struck gas from 5 074 84 feet with an estimated rate of one to three million cubic feet daily. The well likely bottomed at the Delaware lime and sand contact. The No 1 Wilson rises 2 667 feet in elevation and lies 1 650 feet from the southeast line and 330 feet from the southwest line of section 133 34 H and TC.
Mrs. Walter Harwell receives guests this week, her sister Mrs. H. W. Everett of Fort Worth and her son Harold, for a family visit in the city.
Mrs Edith Winkler of Fort Stockton is visiting the home of Mr and Mrs Sam Winkler in Fort Stockton Texas during the current visit.
The second annual Gulf Day opens in Dallas on Saturday June 26 with several hundred Gulf employees from Monahans and Wickett set to attend the two day program sponsored by the Texas division of Gulf Oil Companies. About 250 had reservations at the Wickett Gulf Production Company office. Production, pipe, and refinery departments will shut down to let workers attend and groups depart Friday noon for Pan American Exposition grounds. Work resumes in the field Monday morning.
Five local volunteer firefighters were awarded gold service medals for five years of service. Recipients include Toon Estes, Hayden Yarbrough, Bill Thompson, Babe and Harry Fielding, with the badge featuring an American eagle and a fireman insignia.
Wickett's all star softball squad from oil companies meets Gulf Oilers of Borger Saturday at 4 PM in a Pecos City League battle. Wickett has a strong season record and the Borger club also posts a stellar mark on the Panhandle circuit. An Associated Press dispatch from Austin reports the Monahans Hotel Corporation of Dallas received a charter to operate a corporation with capital stock of 104 dollars. Incorporators listed are C. D. Adamson Ray Delbert Wright and J. B. Crain. Sources note V. Lyman and M. S. Hofens not named in the charter, suggesting the same interests behind a planned Monahans hotel.
A group of Texas Pacific Railroad officials conducted a three coach inspection tour from Dallas to Lovington New Mexico a 229 mile round trip in eight hours The party led by J L Lancaster president and including James supervisor of maintenance and A L Leach engineer aimed to survey lines for possible extension and inspect refinery and commercial plant switches. Terry conductor and Leach engineer were local men.
Mr and Mrs Lester Rbusgzell accompanied by their sons Oscar Lee and Billie and B Cofield took a two day fishing trip at Balmorhea Lake Monday and Tuesday. They visited Fort Davis and drove the scenic drive.
The Monahans Trojans open a six game home stand against the league leading Midland Cardinals with a Saturday rematch to follow. Wink Spudders visit Sunday for a two game set, while the Trojans idle Tuesday. Several former Odessa players join Monahans boosting the lineup. A 10 9 Tuesday night win by Wink over Monahans capped a tightly fought game with late drama.
Mr and Mrs Gilbert Jackson depart for an extended trip in the northwest United States with stops across California Oregon Washington Yellowstone Park and Colorado. They will be away for a time as part of the current survey planning.
Charles G. Walker, band director, was awarded a large National School Band Association plaque Wednesday recognizing the local high school band as first in Class C in the Region Six contest held last month in Oklahoma City. The mahogany plaque shows a silver band emblem and will be placed in the school trophy case.
Evangelist J W Dunn of Bryson Texas started a summer revival at the local Church of Christ Sunday. Services are held each evening at 8 15 with uniformly large crowds attending throughout the week. The public is invited to attend any service. No definite duration has been set.
Grandfalls reports a successful revival at the Baptist Church with large daily crowds. Pastor Rex Wm Waldrop leads the ten day meeting. Leon Hardy directs the singing as services run at 10 a m and 8 p m twice daily.
Radio favorites Hiab Burns and Whartha Raye bring Mountain Music to Palace Theatre starting Sunday. The comedy musical portrays life among hillbillies with Burns and Marfina Raye in a homespun tale featuring feudin and bearded giants.
J W Hutchison received a Bible presented by Francis E Barnes on behalf of the First Christian Church. The Father’s Day service honored the church’s oldest dad. The Hutchisons formerly belonged to the Alpine Texas church and later joined the local congregation.
Visiting over the weekend were Miss Gerry Parker of El Paso, Mr and Mrs Charles Cotter of Alpine, Mr and Mrs A F Robinson of Alpine and Mr and Mrs Roy Spence of Pecos.
Preliminary survey for extending water and sewer lines was completed by J D Fowler of Koch and Fowler Dallas engineers. Petitions will circulate to admit outskirts additions to the incorporated city. The City Council plans a 100000 dollar bond election within sixty days for City Hall fire department water and sewer extensions and street paving. City Hall plans by Koch and Fowler will be ready in two weeks. Water supply adequate with a new well and future increase planned to serve growing population.
Three scouts Ed Long and Charley Winters of Monahans and Dewain Cox of Grandfalls left for Washington to attend the National Jamboree of the Boy Scouts of America from June 26 to July 9. Darrell Wilson Pecos Scout executive will supervise. Highlights include a Roosevelt reception and Arlington graveside ceremonies with about 40 000 scouts expected.
The U S Civil Service Commission announces an open competitive exam for a substitute clerk at the Monahans post office. Applicants must be U S citizens, at least 18 but under 45, and men must be 5 ft 4 in or taller with good health to meet physical standards.
The Palace Theatre fronts gleam as 340 feet of neon decorations are installed around the building and awning at an estimated cost of about $600. Manager E. M. Berg announced the completed work, noting the additions enhance nighttime appearance.
Rev Leon Frazier a local Baptist pastor closed a very successful revival at Ker mit last week. The pastor says many grown men came to know Christ as a result of the meeting. Rev Dee Carpenter of Wink led the song services.
A Carlsbad New Mexico goodwill caravan stopped in Monahans for an hour to distribute literature and invite attendance at the Cavern City Cavalcade July 3 4 5. The event includes a rodeo rattlesnake derby a free barbecue dances and fireworks with plans to feed about 15000 people. Cavalcade officials cited colorful cowboy regalia and noted leaders Roy K Stovall W C Moody Elmer Hepler Victor L Minter O B Jed Wooten J H Harrington and James A Misses Marion Farris Wood among participants.
Pastor Leon Frazier commended Governor Allred for his war on gambling in Texas and condemned gambling in all forms in a sermon titled What Will Monahans Do At the Judgment. Services at the Baptist Tabernacle run nightly with music by local groups and a piano and two violins accompanying song services.
Leslie Brown and L G Byerley announce purchase of the Owens Pay and Take Grocery on the Royalty highway. The new firm B and B Food Store will stock groceries and market items, fruits and vegetables, with a remodeled building and new fixtures. A formal opening is planned for Saturday. The owners also operate stores in Abilene Big Spring and Midland.
