Athlete Chooses Education After Utah Scholarship
The six-foot player went to Utah on a basketball scholarship, majored in recreational therapy, and is qualified to teach in mental hospitals. He hit .315 with Salt Lake City last year, slugging 25 homers and 120 RBIs with 31 steals, earning a minor league player of the year nod from a Brooklyn maker. The first NL team touched by his bat was Pittsburgh, including a Sept. 17 ninth-inning two-run homer that beat the Pirates 2-1 after Cubs call‑up. Ward County veterans’ benefits for May totaled $32,874 according to Vet Service Officer Earl Earp.
