Old Fort Leaton Rich History and Mysterious Past in Texas

Old Fort Leaton, now a State Historic Site near Presidio, Texas, preserves a six-acre adobe complex once run by Ben Leaton. The site, donated by Frank and wife of El Paso, features three-foot-thick walls and a large courtyard. Legends include gun running rumors, a notorious second housewarming massacre, and Leaton’s violent death amid debt and feuds with the Burgess family. The fort served as a stopping point for U.S. Army expeditions and the Boundary Commission in 1852 and the camel train experiment era.
