Continuing Story Of Delbert Winston Jones
The long and unsettled saga of ex convict Delbert Winston Jones continues with unclear status and multiple locations. Some say he remains jailed in Wichita Kansas after an April arrest for an alleged assault on a 16 year old girl, others say he has been released on bond with unknown whereabouts. Jones was tried in 1966 for the November 1965 murder of Martha Garcia, but the life sentence was overturned on appeal. He later faced a Dawson County trial, was convicted again and released on bond pending appeal. The Criminal Court of Appeals upheld the Dawson verdict last month. He was also arrested on a pistol whipping charge in Kansas but confessed when the alleged victim declined charges. he remains jailed in Ward County for carrying the weapon. Defense motions seek a rehearing before the Appeals Court, with possible mandamus to revoke bail and return him to Texas to serve his sentence. Officials await Court of Criminal Appeals mandate before action.
