Merchants of Monahans announce Krazy Daze on August 3 and 4 with prizes for craziest dressed staff and customers. Last year saw strong sales gains, high morale, and favorable reception. advertising will run in the Monahans News and via TV radio and a shopper guide.
City council passed first reading of an ordinance requiring pets to be leashed in public yards and gardens to reduce stray animal issues. City Manager notes 1129 strays picked up in the past year while nearby youths and vandals contribute to late night disturbances and property damage.
Winners in the Kids Day parade held last Saturday during the Diamond Jubilee celebration include Best Pet Sammy Avary, Best Historical Costume Cindy Greenlee, Best Presented Little League Team Wickett Team, Best Decorated Bike Clayton Holcombe, Best Presented Cub Scout Troop Den 2 Pack 43, and Best Presented Girl Scout Troop Troop 11. Each winner received a miniature trophy.
Five Midland men Antonio Salazar Domejo Samuel Salazar Isaac DeLeon Cesareo Deanda have prospected for two months on the Charles Miller estate eight miles east of Barstow but report only sore backs and muscles. Two rock samples sent to El Paso assay office were negative and a third was to be sent in Monday.
The Monahans Jaycees report a successful Diamond Jubilee in Ward County with strong attendance at the Jaycee Carnival and Jubilee events. The letter thanks residents for participation and pledges renewed service to the community.
Police investigated vandalism across about ten downtown businesses with BB shot holes in glass including Sears at 106 East 2nd and the Corner Drug on Main. Chief John Ashcraft said leads were scarce and some damage may have occurred earlier. incidents occurred Monday night with several vehicles spotted.
Terry Bawcom, son of Mr and Mrs Jack Bawcom, earned a $2000 Cabot Corporation scholarship for four years at $500 annually to attend the University of Texas to study medicine. He graduated outstanding from Monahans High, earning Jaycee Outstanding Student, Who's Who, and student leadership roles while excelling in football basketball and track.
The Shiloh Baptist Church colored hosts a benefit barbecue Saturday from 4 30 p m to support the church building fund. Menu includes beef ribs and chicken with beans and potato salad. Food pickup is at 600 East B street or delivery by phone WI 3 2885 per Fred Smith.
Monahans City Council, in regular session, unanimously approved first reading of an animal control ordinance after hearing from residents about pets at large. The measure requires confinement or restraint, empowers the animal warden to seize dogs, and allows muzzling or destruction pending hearings for biting dogs. The meeting also approved bids for city gasoline and set a $250 Arson Reward.
Postmaster Bill Shelton announced a minimum letter size of three by four and a quarter inches effective January 1963. He said larger sizes speed processing with cancellation machines that cannot handle smaller letters and that tiny letters are hard to handle, easy to lose, and require time consuming hand stamping.
Monahans recorded .7 inch of rain Tuesday night with thunder and lightning. The moisture, along with readings from July 16 and 17, brings the July total to about 2 inches in the Monahans area. Wickett, Grandfalls, Pyote, Thornton Ranch, and Wilson Ranch reported varying amounts.
Dowell Division of Dow Chemical celebrates opening of a new Monahans plant with open house and barbecue. The facility houses four bulk silos, maintenance shop, storage warehouse, and 17 Dowell families. J B Lowe leads the Monahans operations under Midland district. Dowell brings cementing service to the area, leveraging decades in oil field chemical stimulation since 1939.
Mary Coble granddaughter of Mr and Mrs H A Pickering suffered what was believed a fractured skull while at play on a swing frame that toppled. She was at Ward Memorial Hospital with condition reported better this morning after a piece of the tubular frame struck her head.
The Commissioners Court on Monday revised a July 9 order closing the wrong road near the Halliburton plant. Judge Estes said the intended closure was a ranch road through a newly established feeding lot operated by H. C. Womack and others, not the industrial road serving Halliburton and other oil field services. Other actions included transfers of 10000 to the Indigent Care fund, 5000 to Precinct 2 Maintenance for a Community Center and Park, and 2000 to the County Coliseum Fund from the General Fund. The court also authorized formal CDA storage facility approval for the courthouse basement for emergency supplies.
Justice of the Peace W A Gotcher rules the July 8 shooting of Alton Larimer at an east side service station as justifiable homicide after witnesses testifying for the state and Brooks Estes defense. Estes remains in custody on $5000 bond awaiting grand jury action scheduled for Monday.
